In a recent interview, Raiders owner Al Davis came clean with the true reason he fired head coach Tom Cable. “He lied to me,” Davis said during a press conference to announce the hiring of Hue Jackson as new head coach. It is nothing new for the controversial Davis to be at odds with his head coaches, but this case was a bit different as it turns out.
Back in 2009 there was an issue with defensive assistant Randy Hansen who claimed that Cable assaulted him. At that time Davis claims he confronted Cable and asked him if there was anything else that he would need to know about before it became public. Tom Cable said no and a short while later three women claimed that Cable assaulted them during their relationships.
The event that seems to have broken the camels back to be a bit cliché was when the Raiders were named as co-defendants in a lawsuit filed by Tom Cable's ex-girlfriend Marie Lutz. “We asked him about it, and he refused to comment,” Davis said. “He would bring her on trips when the team had a road game. There he is the head coach; we have a game to play and he is flying friends in to be with him the night before the game.”
Al Davis claims that he wanted to make the move before the 2010 season but he felt unsure about just throwing Hue Jackson in as head coach and disrupting a possible playoff run. Once the 2010 season ended he had seen enough from Jackson to be comfortable giving him the reigns and letting Cable go. “All this stuff goes a long way against my wishes, against my way of living, and against the Raider way,” Davis concluded.
