Crazy Yoots Surf the Strait of Juan de Fuca

It may not be Hawaii or Malibu here in the upper left-hand corner of the U.S., but sometimes you have to take what you can get. After a storm in late October, some local yoots (and maybe some diehard oldsters, too) went out off North Beach to catch the waves, two days in a row. Thankfully none of our yoots are pictured here. As far as I know.

Beautiful shots! I am partial to the No. California odd spots like Mavericks where wild winter storms can occasionally cause 25 foot waves. The northern coastline has it's share of spots and they shouldn't be discounted. Mavericks is a desirable surf spot where many folks have tried and failed to ride the waves. (Not that I surf, but my sons do.)

B-Dawg is now a lift operator at Eaglecrest Ski Resort, near Juneau, Alaska, where he often snowboards. I think the boys would have loved to surf, but other things always took precedence, and the water is so cold...you have to have a wetsuit even in the summer.

Reminds me of when my sister and I ran into the waves in Oregon in June of 1954. Nobody else was on the beach. We were pounded down against the bottom as tons of ice cold water crashed down on us and we'd have to wait for the wave to dissipate before we could get up, run ashore and then do it again.

There was no question of our respect for the power of those breakers. Our skin was red from the cold, but we had our first experience of "swimming" in the Pacific.

I grew up in the land of big waves, the California coast had plenty of yoots. Great photos Alison, brings back great memories of Santa Cruz.

You gotta surf if you are a surfer. I know that coast and when the waves come...one must surf.
I'm not sure what a Yoot is ( unless its a surfer) but I love your photos.

"Yoot" is the Scandinavian (and maybe some others') pronunciation of "youth."
