Several months ago, an acquaintance passed along a copy of this book to me. A book about the United Kingdom's royal family is not something I would have ever picked up on my own, and I certainly would not pay money for it. This is just a topic that does not hold much interest for me. Still, out of respect for this acquaintance I went ahead and began reading, so that I could be honest when I said I had read it!
My gut instincts were right on target. This book is a glorified gossip rag, only this one drones on for 524 pages. There is a nice selection of photos of the royal family members and some of their properties, but not enough to hold your interest throughout this dismal tome. I made it almost two-thirds of the way through without giving up. Alas, finally I had to surrender. There are far worthier books out there to spend my time on. My “to be read” list is long, and I would rather spend my time on something of quality, rather than waste it on silly nonsense.
The book was published in 1997 through Warner Books. The suggested price inside the flap is $27.00, or $32.00 in Canada. However, since being given my copy I have seen it in several library and bargain sale bins for about $2.00. (Seems everyone wants to get rid of it.) My copy will join the ranks, as it is going in my donation bin just as soon as this review is posted online. (Don't worry – my friend didn't want it back!) ISBN 0-446-51712-7.
