The tide to the moon.
The moth to the light.
Who can explain these relationships?
Everyone blames the victims,
As if they could escape their situation.
Who can explain the moon's futile attempts to
Grasp and hold the tide?
Who can begrudge her this?
And so the tide gets the blame.
Who can assuage the light's bitter need to
Maim her lovers?
Who can begrudge her this?
And so the moths get the blame.
And the rest of us –
The tides and moths of our society,
Learn to live without understanding –
As we never learn to live without moon or light.
