Oprah Winfrey Barred from Interviewing Child Killer Susan Smith

Oprah Winfrey has been barred from interviewing child killer Susan Smith by the new governor of the state of South Carolina. The talk show host has been trying to get an interview with Susan Smith for about ten years.

According to WLTX.com, South Carolina Governor-Elect Nikki Haley will not grant the interview because she believes Susan Smith got way more attention than she deserved when she drowned her two little boys in 1994, and claimed a black man had carjacked them.

Oprah Winfrey had hoped that Governor-Elect Haley might change the rules in South Carolina that bar interviews with inmates, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

It's certainly obvious why Oprah Winfrey would want to interview Susan Smith. Oprah has a unique way of getting her interview subjects to open up and spill their guts during their conversations. However, it seems quite admirable that Governor-Elect Haley won't allow such an interview to take place, and her reasoning is even better.

These days, heinous criminals get far more press coverage than people who do wonderful things get. There is something incredibly wrong with a society that yearns to learn more about these deviants. We've been conditioned by the media to want to understand the minds of these sick and twisted individuals. Years ago people shied away from knowing about the make up of those who could take the lives of their own children. It was once deemed frightening and macabre, but now there is a huge calling for and following of such reports.

Could interviews and reports like the one Oprah Winfrey hoped to have with Susan Smith be part of the reason our society has fallen into a social pit where horrific crimes, especially those against children are committed on a regular basis? We may never know the answer to that. However, if Governor-Elect Nikki Haley can prevent even one sick mind from getting any ideas about such heinous actions from barring Oprah's interview with Susan Smith, then she has indeed done society an enormous favor.
