Ina Winters lived in Webster City, Iowa, a small city in north central Iowa.
Alice lived in Dolliver, Iowa, a village more than 100 miles north of Webster City, almost on the border with Minnesota.
On December 21, 1925, Alice posted a Christmas postcard to Miss Ina.
The card was illustrated with a snowy scene and a group of poinsettias.
A lackluster verse was included under the colorful heading, “A Cheerful Christmas”.
Alice inscribed the postcard, "Love, Alice".
Unless the 22nd was a Sunday, Miss Ina probably received the postcard the next day. The speed of the US Postal service was remarkable.
The red 2-cent stamp reflects the surcharge that was applied to postage for several non-continuous years during and after WW I.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Bought any really nice shoes lately?
Merry Christmas!
But it's Boxing Day here in the UK today - so.... Happy St Stephen's Day!
The feast of Christmas is succeeded by St Stephen's and Holy Innocents.
Folks who know the liturgical calendar have so few opportunities to feel smug these days -no one refers to the ancient names.
I knew both of these, for different reasons. My brother occasionally claims Dec. 26th as his name day (there are other Saint Stephens around the calendar that can be claimed by one so named, especially, for Hungarians, this one). And Holy Innocents has a notable folk tradition associated with it in Spanish-speaking countries: it's like April Fool's Day, and the pranks performed are called inocentadas.
Christmas was lovely, as I trust it was for you.
Belatedly I wish you a cheerful Christmas too. Feel free to substitute a better verse of some sort.
Long ago, I did write ridiculous doggeral in conjunction with several witty writers (especially Geoff B.) who are gone from the site.
I was sure that you were gone from Gather forever.
