This woman is ridiculous. Here's the article from Politico.com:
First lady Michelle Obama plans to warn in remarks Monday that the nation is seeing “a groundswell of support†for curbing childhood obesity, and she is unveiling new ammunition from current and retired military leaders.
“Military leaders … tell us that when more than one in four young people are unqualified for military service because of their weight,†the first lady says in the prepared remarks, “childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well."
The first lady and President Barack Obama are making a rare joint speaking appearance on Monday, at Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Northwest D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, as he signs into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
From the first lady’s prepared remarks:
“We can all agree that here in the wealthiest nation on earth, all children should have the basic nutrition they need to learn and grow and pursue their dreams. Because in the end, nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our children, ... and our hopes for their future should drive every decision we make. These are the basic values that we all share. They’re the values that this bill embodies. And that’s why we’ve seen such a groundswell of support for these efforts — not just from members of Congress here in Washington but from folks in every corner of the country.
“From educators working to provide healthier school meals, because they know the connection between proper nutrition and academic performance. From doctors and nurses who know that unhealthy kids grow into unhealthy adults — at risk for obesity-related diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. From business and labor leaders who know that we spend nearly $150 billion a year to treat these diseases and worry about the impact on our economy. From advocates and faith leaders who know that school meals are vital for combating child hunger, feeding more than 31 million children a day.
“And from military leaders who tell us that when more than one in four young people are unqualified for military service because of their weight, childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well. These folks come at this issue from all different angles. But they’ve come together to support this bill because they know that it’s the right thing to do for our kids. And they know that in the long run, it won’t just save money, it will save lives.â€
Among the statements of support for the legislation gathered by the administration:
Nancy Brown, chief executive officer, American Heart Association: “With the implementation of this law, our nation's kids will be less likely to grow up with early risk factors for heart disease and stroke.â€
— HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: “By increasing the number of students eligible to enroll in school meal programs and improving the quality of food served, this legislation simultaneously tackles both hunger and the obesity levels.â€
— Bill Frist, heart surgeon and former Senate majority leader: “I join President Obama and the first lady in celebrating the signing of ... this bipartisan legislation. ... As a physician, I know smart nutrition leads to healthy and productive lives.â€
— Mike Huckabee, Arkansas governor, 1996-2007: “Reversing the childhood obesity epidemic in a single generation — as first lady Michelle Obama has called upon our nation to do — won’t be easy. ... The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes great strides toward eliminating this threat to our children's health.â€
These people are seriously ludicrous. This is the gov't trying to tell us how to raise our kids. Parents 1 word, stop feeding your kids crap. Gov't your out of touch and need to get out of our lives. End of story. Person freedoms are not for sale. Don't tread on me, or us.

And yes, for those to happen, the government has to step in and stop it.
My son is out of school, but when he was in school, he had normal hot lunches, never soda and there was no vending machines for junk food as almost every school does today, plus elementery schools.
My friends' daughters' kid started kindergarten this year, and I went with her to "parent's night", and right in the hallway were three vending machines, all junk food...and in the classroom there was a frig with soda in it for the kids for treat time.
Someone needs to step in, there is more childhood diabetes, and heavy kids then ten years ago, and it gets worse every year.
Government needs to stay out of our business... If the kid is to big for its size.. start pulling the parents in and get some answers as to why, the kid is huge...Since, the government wants in the peoples lives so bad... let them try this one...
There doesnt need to be any snack machines in the school. I agree with this, but is this really for the goodness of the kids? Reason why, I ask this is back in the day when I went to school, our cafeteria was not gaining any money because we were allowed to leave the school at lunch .. Many times, we would walk to some sub shop and eat there.. I never had a weight problem as I exercised, but back to the story... There was also, a vendor( which I had known every since I was a wee kid) he would bring his truck to the schools and he sold candy, ice cream, donuts, cheeseburgers, chips, sodas... We were warned by our principle ,NOT to buy anything from this truck anymore... I didnt, I walked by the truck and he gave me a donut.. I wasnt going to refuse a free donut with chocolate all over it... Ummmm... makes my mouth water still today...After lunch over the loud speaker many names were called to come to the office... Mine included.... I was in trouble for eating this donut... I tried to explain to that old geezer principle that I was given the donut but noooooo, he wouldnt buy it, so all of us were sent home... One of my friends ( whose name was omitted from being called)which happened to live across the street from me was running down the hall trying to flag the principle down as our meeting had just broken up... I could hear him yelling the principle's name as he yelled.. I bought a pack of gum , can I go home too?
Good point - excellent point. It costs more to eat healthy food. That should be reversed. I'd like to see healthy food subsidized. I'd also like to see unhealthy food taxed - and the revenue used exclusively for medicare. Obesity is a significant problem for America's young.
Btw, you seem to "get it" re: Monsanto and ADM. I wonder how you don't "get it" re: Exxon, BP, and the Kochs.
So..., like Sarah Palin, you would like to ply the kiddies with cookies.
Patriotic I couldn't agree more.
Or they could put a limit on how many kids we have..
Whats next?
If it was Laura Bush who started the healthy program you be all for it.
My son always ate healthy lunches, and even at the home we always had heathly food, I never bought junk food. Soda was a luxury item and was never in the house. Fast foods, once maybe every six months. He is now a vegetarian and will not even eat a slice of pie if it has fat in it..he is very healthly wise...oh, and he had medical problems growing up and still does to this day, and even at 21 he agrees that more kids should eat healthy...he would tell me that most teens eat chips and soda for lunch, oh yum...parents of teens can't watch over them 24 seven.
and going off campus to eat? Never in our day, you stayed on school grounds...though if you wanted to smoke, we did have an inside smoking area (back in the 70's/80s)
No I am not an Obama lover...I am just someone who looks at all sides and decides for herself what she might or not agree with.
As for what he says, he went to 1 lunch period and cannot make generalizations like that. So in reality he has no clue what is really going on in the school system. I stayed on a private college campus and they had healthy and non healthy foods. If you don't teach your kids to balance out their foods then that is on the parent. It is not for the gov't to say what we can and cannot eat. End of story.
