When I was but a wee lass somewhere about 8 to 12 yrs old, every year starting in Nov. we in the junior choir, from church, would practice, practice, practice our songs that we would sing for those that couldn't get out to listen to and bring a piece of joy to them.
We would put on our black and white robes with huge black bows tied large under our chins and would walk the neighborhood singing Christmas songs. Yep I said the Christmas word, back then it was Christmas not happy holidays. Anyhow, we would go to nursing homes and sing to the old folks that were stuck there, they would reward us for our kind singing with cookies and apple cider.
This was done every year, as I got older we would just go out and sing from door to door and one year there was so much snow on the ground we were freezing, we were in this gated area where Thomas Edison lived (and he was still alive at this time) and I don't remember who owned the house that was HUGE, but we got to go in, stand next to this fire place what was bigger than me at 5 ft. tall and had hot chocolate till we warmed up and then we left to sing more.
Christmas was always special at church, decorating the church, singing all the great songs on Christmas eve, helping others was always fun, making food and bringing meals to people that couldn't get out because they were sick or there was too much snow on the ground. Made me feel good to know someone really enjoyed seeing us come by even for 5 min.
Church was a big part of my life when I was younger, it's good to have roots, and memories and work together with many kinds of people. We even got to go see how a family celebrated Hanukkah. That was very interesting.
Now I just make cookies when I have time and hand them to friends and co-workers, listen to Christmas music 24/7 from just about Thanksgiving through to a few days after Christmas or when ever the radio station stops playing them and spend time with family.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas this year. Be safe all and always remember Christmas can be every day if you want, it is for me.
