Amber Heard, star of such movies as Zombieland and The Ward, appeared along side her girlfriend Tasya van Ree at 25 years of GLAAD on December 4, 2011. GLAAD stands for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the organization seeks to promote equality and understanding for those of the LGBT community. Amber came out earlier this year, but with the way homosexuals are treated by those who would have called themselves fans, one has to wonder why Amber, who seems to be a rising star, would want to possibly jeopardize her career by calling attention to her sexuality.
Why did she come out?
According to AfterEllen, Amber Heard's revelation of being gay, and being a part of GLADD's celebration, had a purpose. She wanted to be a part of the solution, instead of hiding her sexuality, which she felt made her part of the problem. It has to be hard hiding affection for a boyfriend or girlfriend because of the reaction it might generate, but those of the homosexual community have even bigger fears due to homophobic reactions. For Amber to come out and let the world know she is not ashamed of who she is, or who she has feelings for, had to be a major decision for the actress, and not one that could have come too easily. We have to give her kudos for her courage.
As for her decision to come out, Amber had the same view as those who have been fighting against bans on gay marriage have been echoing for quite some time. "You have to ask yourself what side are you going to be on, and if we’re too scared to come out and say who we are, we’ll never get anywhere." She is right. If those who are gay stay hidden, and wont step up, there will never be solutions available to them. Their rights will continue to be stomped on, and they will continue to be treated as second class citizens.
How does she feel about her girlfriend, Tasya van Ree? She answered that by saying "She’s so beautiful. I mean, you’d have to be crazy not to want to go out with her!" It sounds like she is happy to be with Taysa to us, and she doesn't care what anyone thinks about it. She is proud of who she is, and she should be.
What's next for Amber?
Amber has a full schedule right now. Coming up next at the box office is Drive Angry, a film she will be co-staring in with Nicholas Cage. Drive Angry has a release date of February 25, 2011, and follows a father (Cage) who is seeking revenge following the death of his daughter. Watching the movie trailer reminds us a bit of Gone in 60 Seconds, with a lot of blood and guts for all the action fans out there. It definitely seems to be one to watch. After Drive Angry, she will being starring along side Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, which has a release date of 2011.
Will Amber Heard's revelation of being gay, affect your decision to see either of these movies? Has your view changed about her, after finding out she has come out of the closet? Please chime in with your thoughts!
