The FBI has issued a warning over a popular new toy, the "Video Girl Barbie," which could be potentially dangerous for children. They believe it could be a potential device used by pedophiles, according to the latest report from ABC News.
The Video Girl Barbie is made by Mattel and sells for $49.99 online at Amazon. The toy features a built-in camera in the doll's chest which allows kids to record movies and then edit them via computer with a USB cable interface. The FBI hasn't said there are any particular safety issues with the toy, but warns of pedophiles often using toys to lure children, then videotaping the children. You may have even seen this tactic on episodes of "Law & Order: SVU" or in several movies depicting the illegal activities of pedophiles.Â
The FBI has noted they are merely looking out for the best interest and safety of children, so they are not trying to hurt Mattel's sales. The toy has been considered one of the more popular items for the 2010 holiday season. However, they make a very valid point that this toy could serve as a tool used by people with malicious intentions. When the doll was first being introduced, one of the earliest Fox News reports mentioned the potential harm, but it didn't seem to come up again until right before the holiday season.
Do you think Mattel should halt sales of the toy, or do they need to make sure parents are warned of the potential dangers right on the product's package?
