Nick and I do Black Friday shopping every year. In years past, it's been typically because the savings allowed us to splurge a bit more on the kids when money was tight. We have always done really well at getting in and out of stores quickly.
The past two years, for instance, we are usually out of Walmart by 5:30 (sales started at 5), and at the next store, Meijers, 5 minutes later. Those are the only two big stores in our small town, and we prefer not battling the large city crowds 20 minutes away for items, so we don't even look at other ads. Anyway, by the time we get to Meijers, it's dead- the group of people who were there have already left to go to Walmart, and most of the Walmart people aren't done yet.
This year, the midnight sales threw off my whole game plan. I had planned to go shopping with a friend after Walmart, but the outlets she wanted to go to were over an hour drive away, and I had a raging headache that didn't abate with meds, and got worse once we got to the crowded store, so I wound up canceling tagging along. I'm kind of glad I did, simply because we did NOT get out of Walmart quickly.
We did wind up taking our time a bit more, but we spent over an hour standing in line to get out the door. We got in line at 12:55 (by the time I realized I was going to stay home, we slowed down, then opted to spend 15 minutes sitting down waiting for the lines to 'thin'-big mistake). We got out the door at 2:10.
This year was the first year we didn't plan the kids Christmas lists around the sales. I've actually had most of their shopping done for a few weeks, though we did pick up several things today that we hadn't planned on.
Money hasn't been quite as tight with me 'working' online, and with Nick's holiday bonus coming in on Monday, so we were a bit more free to splurge.
Mainly on the list were clothing items (shirts, pj's, and fake child sized snuggies), and movies, though we did pick up 2 or 3 other items as well. We also wound up grabbing a toy for Cecilia when she couldn't find it at her Walmart.
All in all, we have Chris & Gilly taken care of for their birthdays as well as Christmas. Gillian is Dec 27th, and Chris is Jan 15th, so we try to get things done before Christmas now and just sort out the extras as birthday gifts.
I'm glad to be home- time to lay down, take some more meds, and sleep (hopefully for 12 hours!). I'm not tired, but my head is still throbbing.
We decided to skip Meijers at 5am. There were only 3 items on my list (not that we wouldn't have found MORE), since we did do pretty well at Walmart, and had also gotten a few things online.
One big thing? I picked up a portable DVD player with Prince of Persia for $59 online earlier today. That will be nice with traveling that we do for Christmas, and separating the kids when they are fighting and I just need quiet. ;)
Did anyone else brave the midnight sale at Walmart?
