Britney Spears did it. Gwyneth Paltrow did as well. Now, there is talk that Katie Couric might become one of the famous names to appear as a guest star on the popular Fox series Glee.
The news anchor may be making an appearance in the post-Super Bowl episode of Glee. It isn't a done deal yet, but the word is that Couric is currently in talks to appear on the popular show.
The news has been met with mixed reaction. Aly Semigran of MTV was excited by the prospect and even came up with a list of five other TV hosts that would be Semigran thinks would be good guests.
Readers on Entertainment Weekly were less enthusiastic about the thought of Couric making an appearance. One commenter who identified himself as Justin remarked that the move "shows that it's not a solid show."
Another commenter noted that he didn't even know whether "Santana" was the character's first or last name. Another person's comment had made him realize that, since the series has focused so heavily on guest stars, viewers really haven't had the chance to really get to know some of the cast.
Would Katie Couric make for a good guest star on Glee? She isn't a singer like Spears, nor is she an actor like Paltrow (who has also proven herself able to both sing and dance). What would the news anchor bring to the show if she were to guest star?
Does the show need to ease up on the guest stars and focus more on the regular cast? That seems to be a legitimate concern. The show is in its second season, and many of the characters still haven't had a chance to really grow and expand during this time. People still don't know much about several of the characters on the show.
Another question is just what Couric's role would be if she were to guest star? Would she sing and dance? It is, after all, a musical show. Singing and dancing is a regular part of the show. Shouldn't singing and dancing be part of the job description for guest stars? Entertainment Weekly suggests that it should be. "Musical numbers are not a spectator sport, " the article notes.
