Amanda Knox Appeal

Amanda Knox will start her appeal today, November 24th.  Amanda Knox is an American who was convicted of murder and sexual assault, in December of 2007. Knox and two men were convicted of murdering Meredith Kercher, Knox’s roommate at the time of the slaying. All three parties involved deny the allegations of murdering Kercher.

Knox has been behind bars, in Perugia, since November, 6, 2007. She is currently facing a 26-year prison term. Knox also faces additional charges of slander, which were filed against her just recently. Knox claims that she was beaten by police and put under pressure when questioned about her roommate’s murder. The trial for the slander charges are set to begin on May 17, 2011.

World-wide controversy over the issue of Knox’s innocence began back in 2007. United States media suggested that Knox was an innocent woman caught up in a possibly corrupt judicial system. Italian and British newspapers, on the other hand, deemed Knox to be a liar, and a sex-crazed individual.

Chiara Magrini, a professor at John Cabot University, stated, “There is an appeal both from the defendants and the prosecutor, so it is a situation where potentially there could be also an increase of penalty. This is a situation where everything could happen. If the court does admit new evidence and witnesses, then "the logical conclusion seems to be that they are not happy — I am not saying with the decision, but with the evidence that was collected in the first trial.”

The final decision is not expected to be made today, but at later additional hearings. Rafaele Sollecito, one of the three persons charged in the murder of Kercher, will be on trial as well. If Knox is indeed innocent, as she so claims, hopefully new evidence will prove that. The murder of Meredith Kercher is a tragedy, and justice should be attained for her and her family.
