Anna was in the basement of Dr Siemens antique shop. A number of items were being shipped for customers on his ebay site and they were busy locating these items and getting them cozy in the boxes filled with styrofoam peanuts. She was in the far corner where coffee colored light from a dim bare bulb illumined a flash of red. Inside of a locked glass case a pair of glittering red pumps stood on black velvet. "Doctor Siemens? The shoes locked in this case. Are they very valuable?"
Doctor Siemens pulled his head out of a tall armoire and looked over a stack of trays of preserved butterflies.
"Ahh, The demon haunted shoes! Tell me. What color are they?"
She frowned. "What color? They're red of course."
The doctor laughed.
"And the style? What style are they?"
"Pumps." Anna replied somewhat unsure of this line of questioning.
He laughed again. "Of course they are, of course they are." He slid his wire frame glasses down to the end of his long nose and worked his way through tables piled with stuffed birds, old radios, foreign language books, and ceramic figurines in shapes both curious and disturbing. He stood beside her and wiped a thin layer of dust from the glass. "The demon haunted shoes appear differently to everyone who looks at them. For instance I see a comfortable pair of exquisite brown loafers with a silver buckle. Size 11. To someone else they might appear as ornate cowboy boots, strappy sandals or ballet slippers. The demon haunted shoes tailor their appearance to suit the viewer. Let me show you."
He took a brass key from his pocket. It was shaped like a ram at one end. He unlocked the case and held held the shoes out to her. "Look."
She took them. They felt oddly warm to the touch. She peeked inside. Size 6 1/2 wide. A perfect match.
Your size? he asked.
"I knew they would be."
He took them from her hands and carefully set them back inside the case.
"They are not so much valuable as they are extremely dangerous. These were made by no ordinary cobbler but by an evil man whomade it his business to know things no man should know."
Anna unconsciously rubbed her hands on her dress as if to wipe the evil off. Doctor Siemens noted this.
"Do not be alarmed. You are in no danger as long as you do not put them on. Woe to the wearer!" he laughed. Pointing one finger up for emphasis.
"What happens if you put them on?" asked Anna
"Once they are on your feet, You will no longer be in control. Merely a helpless and horrified onlooker. The demon haunted shoes will take you somewhere you do not want to go."
Just as he reached in his pocket for the key. The bell ring sounded upstairs in the shop.
"Someone is here. I don't want the cat to get outside. I'll be right back to lock up."
Anna placed her hand against the glass. The shoes were the exact same shade as her nail polish. They would go perfectly with her valentine's day outfit.
