Demi Lovato star of the Disney Channel's "Sonny With A Chance Of Rain" recently entered rehab where the young starlet is rumored to be in treatment for drug abuse and cutting among other things. Left without Demi Lovato as the show's main character what's the Disney Channel to do? Certainly not put the show on hiatus out of respect for the ailing star, after all the show must go on as they say in Hollywood.
Instead the Disney Channel has moved forward with plans to resume shooting in January with or without Demi Lovato. If faced with the unfortunate case of having to film the series minus the rehabilitating Demi Lovato the Disney Channel has decided to focus it's popular series "on the show-within-a-show, the comedy/sketch/music-variety "So Random!" It will feature guest stars, comedy sketches, musical performances and digital shorts."
Demi Lovato's recent rise to stardom, like so many before her, is the direct result of the Disney star machine, some like the squeeky clean Jonas Brothers make it out unscathed, others like the Disney tween machine train wrecks Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan have not been so lucky. Certainly the Disney corporation is not directly to blame for stars like Demi Lovato falling prey to partying hard and abusing drugs, but it says something about the disposable nature of the relationships between these tween stars and their parent company when Disney is so quick to dust things under the rug and move forward.
The Disney Channel justified it's decision to move forward without Demi Lovato, explaining, "This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure. Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues."
What do you think, is Disney doing the right thing? Or would a respectable waiting period be really too much to ask in actual support of their star?
