Jessica Lynch discussed her rescue in an interview with HLN’s Joy Behar. In the interview video, Jessica Lynch said, "I'm no hero." Joy Behar’s interview focused on Lynch’s captivity and rescue in 2003 from Iraqi forces. Jessica was a Private First Class at the time of the ordeal. Immediately after her rescue, she gained instant celebrity status and was called a hero by many but she feels differently about that title.
In the Joy Behar interview video, Jessica Lynch, 27, discusses how she was taken prisoner by Iraqi’s Taliban forces who ambushed her convoy, knocking her out in the process. Everything was hazy but when Jessica regained consciousness in a hospital, she was surrounded by Iraqi forces.
Lynch continued by saying that during the times she was conscious at the hospital no harm came to her and that she was well cared for. However, medical evidence proves she was treated extremely poorly and possibly tortured during the time she was unconscious and before she was taken to the hospital: bones purposely broken, etc.
Directly after her rescue, Jessica Lynch said she was flown to Germany to have multiple surgeries over the course of ten days to repair all the injuries she’s suffered. The Joy Behar interview continues with some interesting information about her homecoming and how she was portrayed as a hero. To which Lynch replied, "I'm no hero."
Jessica Lynch survived an amazing ordeal and despite her thinking she’s not a hero, she really is because of her strong desire to tell the truth about what happened. Her rescue was amazing but her dignity and character are even more amazing.
It is truly much easier to go along with positive hype and gain superstar like status but to remain grounded and to remember who you are and what you stand for is far more impressive than celebrity-hood. Jessica Lynch’s Joy Behar interview was very telling about what type of person she is. Jessica Lynch is obviously the kind of person all people, men and women, should aim to become: honorable and honest.
