Last night's Rachel Maddow's hour-long interview on MSNBC with Jon Stewart about our political situation & how satire affects our perspective. Please don't "Recommend" this post. Stewart looked like he was trying to cover his butt after criticism of his remarks at his rally. Although I also believe he has a point, he may well be swimming against an overwhelming riptide.

I think that he strives for nuetrality, William. He takes it out on both sides of the aisle.

I hear ya. Re your composing a post on the subject: I'll bet that I could make a pretty good guess. I'm not Pollyannish about our troops; I just hate to see so many young lives lost.

Jim, I think that's the problem. What good is striving for neutrality when you opponents strive to wipe you off the face of the earth? That's called striving for extinction. Stewart knows this. He's not fooling anyone.

What an astonishing hour of television. I think it touches on the most important problem facing our country: we can no longer talk to people who disagree with us.

Thank you so much for pointing to this, Jim. I watch Rachel on and off, but I had missed this one and probably would never have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it.

It is easy to believe this is true (Stewart's point), I don't really believe it. It is very rare to see it happen online, but person to person it is quite possible. Yet another reason to turn off the television more often.

The problem with "person to person" is that we have increasingly arranged our lives so that the people around us agree with us.

This was an amazing interview. Mr. Stewart was very ill and still managed to give an engrossing interview. There is no way I could be that focused when I am sick. He made several valid points. Regardless of anyone's politics, he made a great deal of sense. Thank you for the link. I normally don't watch much TV anymore but I think that I need to take it up again.

I think he is a little intimidated by his own influence, and would like to minimize that, as it was not his (professed) intent, and yet, it is pretty undeniable, whether he likes it or not.

Thanks, Kathryn. It gave me more insight into Jon Stewart's intellect.
It was interesting to me, too, that he so completely understood Olberman's draw, and the reasons for his success, but seems clueless about his own. . .

Maybe not clueless, Ron. More like introspective. Trying to figure it out. Ain't we all? LOL
What I mean is, he seems to be totally in denial of how much influence he actually wields, how much progressives identify with his commentary, is all, Jim,

I would guess that neocons consider him as leaning to the left, but he does zing both sides. The best thing is that he appeals to a younger audience, which sometimes seem not to care.
possibly, but when he zings a leader on the left, it is usually about something the left is upset about, as well, if nothing but a clueless move....

What the hell, he's just a comedian. Maybe I'm putting too much into his thought process. I'd prefer that he just give me a good laugh once in awhile.
I think that is what he would prefer, as well, Jim, but as Maddow said, and I agree, he is more than that to many, many, people.
Consider that surveys have indicated he was the ONLY source of news, for a hell of a lot of people.
