After losing signature series Project Runway to Lifetime, Bravo's still trying to regain a fashion foothold with The Fashion Show. In order to make it a little less Runway-esque, The Fashion Show is now about creating the Ultimate Collection. The designers are divided into two teams and not only do they have to meet the weekly challenge, but their design must mesh with the rest of the team's creations to create a collection.
Sounds like a good idea, right? Because anybody who makes this show can design, but learning to work real-world style is tricky. Just listen to Calvin Tran. When told he had to work with a team, he nearly puked. "I have to work with. . . . people?" For the rest of the episode he sliced and diced and all with subtitles because his accent is so thick. Sometimes, even the subtitles didn't help like when he told another designer that he was done with her and she was "accused." Were we going for "excused" maybe?
Calvin wasn't the only banana in the bunch. Another designer described his outfit as being a throwback to the 80's as if you lived here on earth through the 80's but you were really living through it in space and you'd come back from space in order to wear this dress. Huh?
As you can imagine, Team Emerald Syx (starring Calvin) got off to a rocky start with Calvin suggesting they choose another name. As if he could see the future, he reminds his team that when they lose, they'll be five and not Syx.
The other team, Team Nami (Iman spelled backwards) actually worked together to turn out a beautiful, cohesive collection. They won. Syx lost and loose end Francine was sent home. Calvin's yellow dress lined with fake rhinestones was as tacky as the Liberace collection at K-Mart, but because he was the only spark of personality in the show, he was spared.
The biggest problem with The Fashion Show isn't the designers or the challenges, it's the hosts. Iman is just hard to listen to after a minute and though Isaac Mizrahi is fun, he's no Tim Gunn. He's not even a Michael Kors. Bravo can do better than this.
