Tonight on a brand new episode of Glee, the ladies of McKinley High take on not one, but two classic rock songs with Rolling Stone's "Start Me Up" and Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer."
Though the teenage audience of Glee may be familiar with the concept of "mashup," a lot of them probably haven't even heard the Stone's version (though one could give them a little more credit with Bon Jovi.) Unfortunately for them, they won't realize this performance doesn't come close to the originals.
"Living on a Prayer" -- really, Glee? This is a karaoke classic, but it's way overused. Though the show attempted to switch things up with the mashup, it still came across too close to the original. As for "Start Me Up," as the Stone's say, "you can't compete."
Perhaps Glee needs to take the advice of another show on FOX. As Simon Cowell and company have instructed American Idol contestants, again and again, if you're going to take a classic tune, you need to switch it up considerably to make it your own. The Glee mashup wasn't enough to make the two classic songs distinct and different from that of the original artists. Despite that, everyone knows this single will be at the top of the iTunes chart the next day.
How do you rate the Glee performance of Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" and Rolling Stone's "Start Me Up"?
