Google technical writer Noirin Shirley just wanted to attend the ApacheCon tech conference, learn some new and interesting things about computer jargon that the layman would be clueless about, drink a few beers and call it a night.
But Twitter engineer Florian Liebert (what's up with these names?), had other plans.
In Shirley's blog today, she recapped the drunken after party held in he
r hotel room following the conference, in which employees replaced their typical nightly routine of Mountain Dew and World of Warcraft with "beer and beer pong."
Noirin Shirley writes in her blog that after the party was moved to an Irish pub, Liebert followed her into the bathroom, grabbed her, tried to kiss her, and jammed his hand into her underwear. Liebert was MIA for the conference the next day. Shirley contacted the police, turning the story from a simple display of horny drunkenness into actual news.
According to Gawker, "the tech community in general is probably 20 years behind most when it comes to gender issues."
Since when? Don't all geeks treat other geeks equally, regardless of gender? When one nerd gets thrown in a locker, aren't there five other boy and girl nerds there with the combination to get him/her out? This makes no sense.
Shirley then released this statement:
"I'm tired of the fear. I'm tired of people who think I should wear something different. I'm tired of people who think I should avoid having a beer in case my vigilance lapses for a moment. I'm tired of people who say that guys can't read me right and I have to read them, and avoid giving the wrong impression."
It seems that once these guys finally get out of their mother's basements, they are in fact, quite horny. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to control themselves.
Nerd on nerd creepiness at a tech conference. It looks like someone's floppy disk experienced too many megs of RAM (wink wink).
