I loved this film! Absolutely adored it in fact, but am sad to see that it hasn’t fared well in the cinema (it comes out on DVD October 26th). Oddly enough, it seems to be doing better worldwide than it has done in its culture of origin (more on this later). All four of the women are back: Sarah Jessica-Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon playing the roles that made them household names. Also along for the ride are the majority of the supporting players – you know, the men in these gals’ lives.
Â
The film opens at the wedding of Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson) and Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone) saying their I dos with Liza Minnelli officiating. Of course, this wouldn’t be a ‘Sex in the City’ story without Carrie wearing something completely ridiculous, which she does as Blatch’s best man. I won’t spoil it for you, but suffice to say you will ask what was she, or Patricia Field, ‘Sex’s’ famous wardrobe mistress, thinking. I’m going to harp
on this a second longer; Jessic-Parker looked so cute in a tux, why, why, why ruin it?
Â
Building on where the last movie left off Carrie (Parker) and Big (Chris Noth) find themselves settling into life as a married couple. Apparently, Carrie didn’t consider that she was marrying a man in his fifties when they went to the courthouse to make it all legit and now is saddled with a man who wants to spend
his evenings watching TV. Things come to a head when Big treats his bride with a one-year anniversary present of a television in the bedroom. I know, OH-OH!Â
Â
The rest of the girls are having some life changes of their own. Charlotte (Davis) is finding out that being a perfect mother and wife doesn’t exist as she experiences the joys and downs of her expectations. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know how to let go of her guilt for not living up to her ideal. Miranda is having some work issues. I should also mention that for once they (they being Â
Michael Patrick King, Darren Star, Sarah Jessica Parker and Patricia Field) have Miranda looking cute as if she fits into the group style wise. I know this sounds mean, but it honestly it isn’t an attack on Cynthia Nixon as much as it is for keeping her looking so hard. I get it that Miranda is a corporate lawyer, but really, at some point even corporate attorneys wear attractive clothes and have nice hair don’t they?   Samantha (Cattrall) is trying to be forever young and don’t we all love her for that?
Â
The girls end up vacationing together in Abu Dhabi thanks to a PR opportunity for Samantha. There all of the characters face the issues that they have left behind in New York. There is one great scene with Miranda coaching Charlotte about letting go of the things you can’t control as a mother. Carrie ends up running into someone from her past and Samantha ends up shocking most of the Arab world. All and all I thought it was a great time in the theater watching ‘Sex and the City 2’. Unfortunately, with a 100 million dollar production expense, the film didn’t meet expectations, especially in the states where it didn’t break over 100 million, however it made nearly 300 million worldwide. Rumor has it that a third installment from this franchise won’t be made because of that, which is sad because I, and I'm sure others, have come to really love these forever Goddess girls. Â

I think my sister hated this and she loves that show.
The wedding, yes. Well, it was, overone and weird, and I thought the gay jokes were outlandishly bad and anti-gay. A pretty funny scene with Samantha - that scene that got her into major trouble with the law - but I thought it was about the only non-cliched scene in the whole movie. And even though the burka scene was pretty fun, it came off as very cliched.
How could they do SUCH a great job on movie script 1 and SUCH a bad job on movie script 2??
I would rather watch re-runs of the TV show, which my daughter saw when it was on HBO at friend's houses, btw, I didn't know about that, but anyways. . . moving right along, the recent movie and the recent TV shows from some of these folks. . . are close to pathetic.
Sex and the City 2 - movie review - Got script? Give good script? Get good script? Follow along
Kathryn, I obviously liked this film better that you. I guess I thought the producers and screenwriters did the best that they could with the stages of life these women are at presently. I thought it was good that Miranda now seems to be in a position that she enjoys being an attorney more. Samantha is doing everything in her power to remain the Sex Goddess. Carrie is now married and realizing that a lot of marriage IS sitting around watching television together. Charlotte's storyline I like and then didn't. I think it would have been nice to have a quick scene where she is saving the nanny from being overrun by the children - but that's just me.
I have to admit that I didn't like the show when it was first on because I didn't think the characters had any depth, now I do.
In real life, Samantha prefers being single and was born in England, goes to England often and lives in Canada a lot, as well as NY. Interesting to see that side of the actress.
I think your review was so good; I was hoping for more of what i'm used to, not a moving on.
I loved the first movie. Since I don't own a TV, I hadn't seen the series. I checked them all out of the library after seeing Sex I - and watched the entire 6 years of it over a couple of weeks. By the time I was through OD'ing on it, I felt like I had just lost my friends. In contrast the second movie made me gag.
I don't know that it's doing any better abroad. The only place I ever seem to catch a glimpse of it is on airplane screens (and half the time, the passenger is asleep in front of it!)
Re: Kim Cattrall - did you see her in The Ghost Writer (Roman Polanski's latest film)? It was good to finally see her as a serious actress. I mused that she must have taken that part as an antidote to Sex II.
i did not see that Polanski. Must get it.
