1862: Union forces halt a Confederate invasion of Kentucky at the Battle of Perryville.

1871: The Great Chicago Fire started, ultimately destroying four square miles of the city.

1944: "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" debuted on CBS Radio

1945: President Harry S. Truman announced sharing the "bomb" only with Britain and Canada.

1956: Yankees Don Larsen pitches first perfect game in the history of the World Series.

1957: Jerry Lee Lewis recorded the song "Great Balls Of Fire."

1966: The U.S. Government decreed LSD "a dangerous and an illegal substance".

1967: Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara captured in Bolivia.
