Lou Dobbs is facing accusations of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants to maintain his various properties, including his family's homes and horses. Dobbs fired back at the investigative reporter who wrote the article published in The Nation on Thursday, calling the article "an attack piece" that made "outrageous claims." The report claims that he depended on undocumented workers for years. Dobbs is notorious for shutting down those who hire undocumented workers.
According to ABC News, Dobbs broadcast his conversation on his radio show with The Nation reporter Isabel MacDonald on Thursday, who fired back at Dobbs with a statement confirming that her investigation's reports were 100 percent "legally vetted." He failed to bring any evidential claims to the table, but noted that if he did hire any illegal immigrants that he didn't know about it. MacDonald was shooed off of his radio show, but ended her interview by saying to Dobbs, "Your listeners deserve better. I'm saying your listeners deserve to know the truth."
MacDonald cites in her piece that she "interviewed at least five undocumented immigrants who did work for Dobbs." MacDonald notes that while Dobbs would be talking on his nationally syndicated CNN show about felony charges for hiring undocumented workers, he was guilty of the same crime. MacDonald quotes one of his employees, Rodrigo Ortega, reporting that Dobbs "knew very well that the majority of us didn't have papers," but that it "was never a problem."
Dobbs, formerly on CNN, was most recently known for blustering about his opposition to illegal immigration, on his CNN show, Lou Dobbs Tonight. He also ranted about his disapproval of the government working to reform immigration. After about 29 years on the news network, he left CNN unexpectedly in 2009.
With the recent controversy surrounding Meg Whitman's campaign, and now with this report, it's perplexing that the people on the "right" who claim to disapprove of immigration reform the most, are the principal abusers of this law. If the problems with the immigration system in the U.S are reformed, then undocumented workers will no longer have to be exploited by the multi-millionaires who knowingly hire them.
