Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services director Kathleen Sebelius are offering apologies to Guatemalan and Hispanic U.S. residents today. Their words of remorse follow the shocking discovery that U.S. medical researchers intentionally infected Guatemalans with STDS in the 1940's.
It was a researcher at Wellesley College named Susan M. Revereby who discovered the shocking evidence of U.S. researchers' use of Guatemalans as human guinea pigs. The atrocious experiments co-sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service, the NIH and the Pan-American Health Sanitary Bureau were conducted by researchers attempting to learn if syphillis was preventable, and to that end they threw ethics out the window and not only infected people with sexually transmitted diseases but also encouraged them to spread them.
Reverby came across the evidence while researching the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study that involved the United States Public Health Service withholding penicillin from African American men who thought they were involved in a study about "bad blood" so that researchers could observe how the disease progresses and kills.
This is a sad, horrifying and disgraceful abuse of human beings and there are no words that can mitigate the damages.
