There is news of a biopic set to be made on the life of Queen front man Freddie Mercury. The news of the casting was released just on Thursday afternoon, and I'm sure the selection will have people scratching their head just a bit.
According to Deadline, "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen has been casted to star in the biopic being made as the singer. The film is being produced by GK Films in a partnership with Robert Deniro and Queen Films. The script currently being penned by Peter Morgan will focus on the early years of the band up to their epic 1985 performance at Live Aid.
That performance is what many know the band for, along with their music. A rights package for some of their most popular tunes has also been signed, and Cohen is a lock on the deal. The film is set to start production in 2011. No news on a release date yet.
Seeing Cohen in this role should really be interesting. There is no denying he looks like the singer that died in 1991 from complications of AIDS, but can the comedic actor pull out the personality and the epic that is Freddie Mercury? He was a force of nature with Queen. Not just anyone can pull this off. Time will tell if Sacha Baron Cohen can. Will you go see this one when it hits theaters finally? Or will it be a bust? Go here for the latest movie news.
