A Vancouver woman who was allegedly attacked when acid was thrown in her face has admitted that the entire thing was a hoax, and that her wounds from acid were self-inflicted.
Fragile Mental State
According to MSNBC, Vancouver police have announced that the woman has admitted to splashing hers
elf with the acid, and recanting her accusation that a black woman through the acid on her.
28-year old Bethany Storro is said to be in a "fragile mental state" and is said to be remorseful about the entire situation. Prosecutors will now have to decide if charges will be filed against Bethany Storro.
Storro's original claims were that a "black woman with a ponytail" threw acid in her face on the night of August 30. She was celebrating a new job at the time of the supposed attack.
Storro told police that her attacker said, "Hey, pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" before splashing the acid in her face.
A press conference was held just a couple of days after the attack. Storro claimed that her belief in God would see her through her recovery.
An uproar ensued in Vancouver, as women wondered if it was safe to be out and about in the city after dark.
Police Recognized Inconsistencies
Police said there were inconsistencies in Storro's story, and in the patterns the splash marks made with the acid on her face. After further interviews with Storro, she admitted Thursday afternoon to the entire thing being made up. An appearance on Oprah Winfrey's talk show was canceled as a result of the truth coming out.
CNN reports that police are uncertain about the reason behind Bethany Storro doing such a horrible thing to herself, and then making it look like a crime had been committed.
Police Chief Clifford Cook wants Vancouver residents to know that no crime took place and that there is not a woman running around throwing acid at people.
"It has had an impact on our community," Cook said. "It has brought negative attention on our community that is undeserved."
Clearly Bethany Storro is mentally ill. To throw acid on one's own face and endure the painful surgery and recovery that will follow as the result of a deliberate act simply points to someone who is not of sound mind.
Hopefully Bethany Storro will receive both the mental and physical help she desperately needs, after which she should be forced to make restitution to the city of Vancouver.
