Actress Gabourey Sidibe graces the cover of next months issue of Elle Magazine. The star of Precious looks super cute her Elle photo, but some are saying that her skin was lightened for the cover.
The magazine made the following statement, "We have four separate covers this month, and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others. We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is….We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons" (via Entertainment Weekly).
The photo could just be the result of lighting, but that's not good enough for some skeptics, who are convinced that Sidibe's photo was altered.
Sidibe is very dark, and people are used to seeing her on television and in movies. This cover shot very well may be due to lighting, but it's interesting that so many people picked up on it. It would be silly for Elle Magazine to choose Sidibe for their cover, and then for them to go ahead and alter her natural beauty. It sort of defeats the purpose. What do you think?
