Featured Question of the Day

"I keep hearing about how Gather used to be a site for writers, and at one time there was a 'home page' like many other sites currently have...so, just what was Gather like when it started?"

It is true that Gather did have a traditional home page which regularly spotlighted members, content and groups similar to a daily community magazine. This home page helped to foster a feeling of community on Gather, and was a good way to find quality content and groups of interest.

However, this home page was eventually replaced with the personalized home page that you see today.

Gather also catered heavily to writers, as well as photographers and musicians in its early days, and many of the major contests and promotions on the site focused on these talents. For a brief glimpse into the Gather of yesteryear, please review the links and information in the timeline below:

Due to the sheer volume of Gather history I've compiled, I will need to split today's “Featured Question” across multiple comments...and days!

The series will conclude in tomorrow's edition.

Ads? Didn't know Gather ran those. I wish Tom and others were still involved here more, I wonder what their plans are for the site now (if any).
Matthew M. Aug 30, 2010, 11:50am UTC
Here's the ping I sent Tom on 7/1/2010. It's still awaiting approval. What's Tom so busy with? Perhaps he has other duties I'm not aware of (outside of Gather)
Matthew Murphy, Jul 1, 2010, 11:23AM EDT
Tom,

I've noticed a change in Gather. Less social interaction and more tabloid news. While I still think Gather is the best social networking site, it's been a disappointing turn for me and many others. I'd appreciate it if Gather came up with some changes to help encourage more social interaction among members.

Have a great Independence day!
Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 30, 2010, 12:02pm UTC

That's a great ping Matthew...but I'm not surprised that it hasn't been looked at or approved. As you'll see going forward in the Gather timeline, the last open CEO chat was 2 years ago, and Tom has abandoned almost all interaction on the site.

In my opinion, it's not about him being busy elsewhere...it's about him wanting to be anywhere but here.

Matthew M. Aug 30, 2010, 2:39pm UTC
That's what I was thinking. He's either lost interest, is embarrassed with how the site has turned out, or something.
Μόףףý ● ķ ~ Sep 8, 2010, 8:11pm UTC
Wow Kev, I've finally taken a moment to try and check out your series here. I remember a lot of this stuff ~ its kinda sad how things have changed around here. I'd love to delve in to each link, but it takes forever for a page to load on this site for me these days. Bummers :(

Well said, Darlene.
Lisa W. Aug 28, 2010, 3:17pm UTC
I just came back to Gather after a long time away and I do miss the old home page. While the personalized home page is nice, the old one was a better way to find new content/people/groups. Glad to see some of my old friends are still here though.
Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 28, 2010, 3:58pm UTC

Hello Lisa!

The removal of the home page stripped the site of its sense of 'community'...in my opinion.

Plus, I think it reduces the number of new members enrolling in the site.

Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 28, 2010, 4:00pm UTC

There are only slightly more than 850,000 accounts on Gather, which is really surprisingly low considering the enrollment trend Gather had previously.

Lisa W. Aug 30, 2010, 1:34pm UTC
Kevin, I hadn't thought of the connection between the absence of the homepage and low enrollment of new accounts, but it makes perfect sense. That is really a surprisingly low number of total accounts.

The other advantage of the homepage was that it was an incentive for people to produce high-quality content with hopes of getting it featured. And it was a nice non-monetary award for those who were featured.

I really wish they would bring it back!
Μόףףý ● ķ ~ Sep 8, 2010, 8:13pm UTC
850,000? How many of those are actually active members? I wonder. Not many, I'm guessing.

Larry,

You will receive an email notification for EVERY reply that your comment receives (if you have chosen this option). However, the same is not true for other notifications.

For example, you may only receive ONE notification for content (photos, specifically) that your friends have published, even if they have published more than one.

Hi Kevin. I love the history lesson. I joined in late 2008 and I have read post after post stating that Gather ain't what it used to be and after reading the info you have written I now understand why they are posting these things. It's actually more of a chat room for points now. It's still fun and I like Gather. Nice article.

Thanks so much for the history lesson, Kevin. One thing stood out in the Seattle Times article:

Gather will need at least 1 million regular subscribers to support its business model, said analyst John Blossom with Shore Communications. Its true strength is in community as content, he noted.

"Rather than aggregating the content as the value point, it's the community itself that represents the most important aggregation," he said.
Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 28, 2010, 6:26pm UTC

That stood out for me too.

Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 28, 2010, 6:27pm UTC

Sadly, Gather still doesn't have 1 million regular subscribers.

Kevin (''The SiteWizard'') V. Aug 28, 2010, 6:28pm UTC

...and of the 850,000 accounts they do have, only a fraction of that amount are likely active.
