I love farmers markets!

For my series of articles featuring farmers markets around Hawai'i Island (aka the Big Island of Hawai'i) for the Hawai'i HomeGrown Food Network, I have been having a lot of fun visiting different farmers markets.

So far I've visited 5 different ones and have shared 4 features here.Â The 5th one will be published by the Hawai'i HomeGrown Food Network in a few days and I will share it here....in the meantime, here are some photos I took of produce at the last one...Â

Beautiful photos! We just got a farmers market downtown, but I have not been there yet...I cannot wait though.

Terrific looking vegatable. I really like the eggplants. They are not quite that nice here. I guess because they are shipped in from other states or countries.

I love eggplant too, David. A few (not many) of our farmers markets allow vendors to sell produce they buy from wholesalers.....this one doesn't. The produce HAS to be grown locally to be sold there and that is how MOST of our farmers markets function....

Sonia, I just joined. Looks like an excellent group. I DO love farmers market. The ones around here aren't that huge. I can get local veg until late Fall and then all you can find are crafts. I enjoy them while they last.

The veg at your farmers markets look wonderful.

Denise, we are so fortunate on this island to have so many great farmers markets!

At last count we had 26 full-fledged farmers markets and then there are quite a few CSA (community supported agriculture) and a lot of permanent fruit and veggie stands around the island...

We are also lucky here in Southern CA. There are a few very good ones and also we can grow most of the year since we are zone 10. We have really been expanding what we grow on our small city lot.

But I know many people around the country really do not have access to good quality fresh from the farm produce

Yeah, I too love the fact we can grow all year round... we are zone 11, but some of our areas are much cooler than others - diversity of altitudes and terrain -

I cannot imagine liging in, say.....Minnesota or the Dakotas or New England where the growing seasons are so short!

I grew up in New York but do not think I could ever live there again. The thought of cold and snow just does not do it for me. If I want to see it I can go to the mountains and visit for a few hours then come home go to my back yard and pick a salad.

LOL.......I feel the same...although the farthest north I have lived in was NC, but I have been in NYC in the dead of winter - with all of the gray and dirty snow pushed to the sides of the streets and saw cars whose tires had frozen solid to the curbing...;-) - and also in Michigan in May where the water in the dog bowls INSIDE the garage would get a layer of ice on top!!!
