What happened to being 'Quiet' in the library?

 I am spending some time in the library today. I hardly get to go to this one. It's a very large one with a bigger selection of books and lots of new computers.  But, I think I will steer clear of it from now on.    Right now, I am trying to use the computer.  There was a woman next to me with two kids, both toddlers. One on her lap crying, the other trying to climb on mine! She left and then here comes another kid, about 5-7 yr.s, trying to login on a computer by hisself.... There are 3 people using computers that keep talking on their cell phones and receiving calls with their music or noisy bells ringing. one is right next to me...... kids screaming everywhere..... and to top it all off, someone left a poopy pair of shorts on the changing table in the restroom! AAA! 

 I was going to sit and read some, but have changed my mind.

 Whatever happened to being Quiet in the library? I think this one needs the Library police or something.     Thanks for letting me rant while i sit here trying not to scream out loud at everyone. ;)

What a real bummer, Kim! That's why I don't even bother going to libraries any more........seems like "quietness" is non-existent anymore! People have no consideration for others at all. We have a brand new library just a couple of miles from us (well, within the last 3 or 4 years), and I've yet to step foot inside the door. Sorry you had such a bad experience.

Oh my gosh....cell phones in the library? Just plain stupid and ignorant......nothing infuriates me more than having to "be involved" in someone else's phone conversation......arghhhhhhh.......just so annoying!!!!

one next to me, two across from me. i turned mine off before i came inside. guess rules are different these days. still is rude in my book

It's the same here at ours. Except the poopy diaper in the rest room. lol~ The cell phones are the real pains. Oh yes the crying etc gets on my nerves. But that's life with kids, can't leave em home.. lol~ But those rude people with the cell phones. There are signs posted everywhere to turn them off. But does anyone listen? nope~

I just quit going to the library, period......even when our son was smaller, I quit taking him for the kids' programs, as people were so outrageously rude, they'd never keep their kids under control.....I got mad and left.......and from then on, I always bought kids' books, as well as our own books and haven't been to a library probably in about 15, 16 years.
I figure, I do NOT have to put up with all that rudeness......I can go on Amazon.com and buy books very, very inexpensively, and have them delivered right to my home. It's getting to the place I do about 70% of my shopping online........because I refuse to deal with rude, inconsiderate, loud people!

I can understand kids being kids. it's the parents that don't even try to rein them in that piss me off. I read so fast that it's not worth buying books. I'll just stick to the small library in town closer to me. it's usually empty because it's so small. now i have only 15 minutes left. lol... least i got off the farm

Our library says cell phones must be off. Most people comply, or if their phone rings they go outside with it. The noisiest I have experienced the library lately was last week, when some adults were all meeting there to go somewhere else. I think it was a group from a 50th class reunion. There actually were places they could have gone that would not have disturbed people but they stood and chatted right in the magazine reading area and computer area.

Our local library is more active now. We have an open computer section that is not quiet, because others interactive with each other and they know the parents use doing the day with their babies and toddlers. Then we have the reserved private section for the more serious computer users and book readers. I think it's time for your library to make some changes because technology is not quiet. Your library should be using those tax dollars to reorganize. PUBLIC libraries will never be that old dungeon comfortable feeling again.

Sorry to hear about that, you would think libraries would be a lot quieter. I remember never going to the library at my school because people used it as a way to socialize instead of doing work or had headphones loud enough to hear a mile away.

My local library is good though and they re-built the main one a year or so ago. It is beautiful, all glass lobby and just looks great.

This is a beautiful library too and it is fairly new. I guess it's to big to keep up with all the people. i guess i'm just old school.

We just came back from the library and it wasn't too bad except for
a few kids being too loud.

I don't know why they don't have a separate section for the kids,
it just makes sense to me.

they do have a separate section for kids here. It's the parents who are letting their kids run everywhere but there,lol. I can't blame the kids for that. Just whoever brought them.

Sorry you had such a bad experience......I haven't been in a library in years but can only imagine what they must be like with cell phones and computers, etc.

I used to work in a library and I had to go tell people to turn off their phones or take it outside. You wouldn't believe how nasty and rude they are to me! They tell me things like they had to take that call at that moment and couldn't step outside. Or, that their call is absolutely essential and they just had to call that person at that time. What did they do before cell phones? If you had to make a call, you went to a pay phone. People have such a feeling of self-importance and self-entitlement!

Amen to that! I work at a public library. When you ask a child to keep it down they usually just look at me and as soon as I leave the childrens' room the noise picks back up. Tell them to leave and I'm told they can't go because their parent dropped them off and won't be back til ---. It's really exasperating. We have adults who scream in their cell phones while on the computers also. Some people take their cell phone calls in the entry which is nice. When kids are allowed to visit it doesn't take long for their voices to escalate. I have no answers. I will say our attendance is down and from all these comments I can understand why.

You make a good point, library usage has been declining. Part of it is because of new, cheap technologies (such as computers at home), but I do think some of it is due to increased noise levels.

I was at a library recently, using a computer and my phone vibrated. You know what I did? Handed it to my boyfriend and told him to go outside and answer. ;)

Our local library is housed in an old former bank. It's a small, cramped space and the librarians are pretty good about keeping older kids under control when they use the computers, and I've even seen kids get booted out for not quieting down when asked.

haven't been to a library in several years. seems like as soon as they started loaning out cd's & movies, the library got loud. rudeness seems to be the norm no matter where ya go!! it really is sad. :(

I don't think I've ever been in a noisy library. I've been in 4 different ones this summer and all were quite enough to hear a pin drop. There were conversations but in undertones. I think you should complain - perhaps the staff needs a reminder.

it is the same with the library near me because it is near a high school and jr high...... i now go to one further aways because it is quiet there......i guess people don't know the library is suppose to be a quiet place anymore.....
