President Obama has announced publicly that he supports the building of a NYC mosque near the infamous Ground Zero site.
Ramadan Dinner
MSNBC reports that the president has been both cheered and jeered for his announcement. President Oba
ma addressed guests at a White House dinner in celebration of Ramadan Friday.
"Muslims have the right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," he said.
George Washington
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that Obama's message reminded him of George Washington.
"Two hundred and twenty years ago this week, the Father of Our Country penned his famous letter to the Jewish Community of Newport Rhode Island or, as he called them, 'the Children of the Stock of Abraham.' President Obama's words tonight evoked President Washington's own August reminder that 'all possess alike liberty,'" Bloomberg said.
Clearly, not all New Yorkers feel the way Mayor Bloomberg (who supports that project) and President Obama do.
Hallowed Ground and American Standards
According to Fox News, President Obama intends for Ground Zero to remain "hallowed ground," but believes that in doing so we must move on according to "American standards," and that means freedom of religion.
Republican Representative Peter King of New York made the following statement regarding the president's announcement.
"President Obama is wrong," said King. "It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero."
Many relatives and friends of those lost when the Twin Towers fell on September 11 strongly oppose the building of a mosque at Ground Zero. They agree with Rep. King that such a move is highly insensitive.
It certainly sounds as though this mosque will be built, and it seems in doing so that Americans, while they claim to be following "American standards" are in fact becoming less and less American in doing so. Certainly the United States is a melting pot, but it is first and foremost American.

Either support the laws of the land or change them, but remember, if you remove freedom of religion from those laws --- it will be your religion that goes as well.
I am amazed at the stuff the wacky fringe makes up, it borders on the thing they give lipservice to -- treason.
Here is my favorite statement I have read in a while: "I will always follow God! "
Apparently more people support Allah that I thought
To that notion, people forget that rescue workers and others who died in the tragedy were also Muslims, Jewish, Buddhist --- the thought that a certain set of Christians own the religion of a certain area is absurd.
If Newt Gingrich and others have such a high moral sanctity, maybe they should stop cheating on their wives, fleecing the American taxpayers and --what the heck-- actually start attending a church of their choice.
To claim some moral high ground, so they can be prejudice, is perhaps the greatest irony (if not sin) of everything that has happened before and after 9-11.
Think about this: Timothy McVeigh was Catholic, if they were to build a Catholic church in the area of Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, who would protest that. Are all Catholics terrorist because of McVeigh?
I should add there is a backlash wherever there is an attempt to build a Mosque; and standing on the bible does not put you on higher ground.
Thank some 'god' they didn't turn on the radio and dance
And wrong, many many Muslim leaders denounced the attack. If you have decided to turn a blind eye to that fine. (google: muslims against terrorism and you only get 279,000 results -- you can start here http://www.muhajabah.com/otherscondemn.php)
But we live out of context. At the time of 9/11 there was suicide bombers and bombing between the Palestinians and Israelis. I kept thinking how long can that go on. when you understand that the American politicians continued that violence by supporting Israel with money and weapons. [I bet a lot of Christians, buddhist and confucians sat back and said nothing.]
I am not condoning the reaction of Muslims, but as a faith, when you see America as the money and guns that kills your family... it was only a matter of time before there would be a reaction --- it was by an extremist, not the mainstay of the Muslim faith.
If anyone was attacking you, and you found out that those who were attaching you were supported by Martians and someone bombed Mars --- many would sing and dance. Please keep it in context
And remember, though it wasn't probably not intended, you have just implied that those who want to build a Mosque in NYC were singing and dancing when 9-11 happened. (And for the muslims that were singing and dancing --- it's up to Allah to ultimately take care of them)
The bottom line and it is clear no one wants to accept this, it isn't about religion, anybody who meets the zoning requirements can build there. Zone the area so no religion can build there if it is a problem.
The other thing to note, if you are of any religion and you accept the government telling you how and whre to build a place of worship... it is only a matter of time until your faith will receive the marching orders
