Echinacea otherwise known as Coneflower

My shady yard does not allow much color during the summer but one thing that grows like crazy is my purple Cone flower.

When the season is over and the flowers are gone. I let them stand. The birds eat the seeds off the top of the flowers and when it snows, the snow collects on the dead ends and is pretty to look at.

Great photo essay.

We have a shady garden too and the coneflowers are blooming like crazy. RIght now we have purple coneflower, shasta and alaska daisies all over
the place.

i was told to dead head them to see if that would make new blooms pop up but im not sure it that works i have done it to two plants so far to see

I don't think for those of us in the north dead heading this flower works. I've found the blooms will last all summer if they are watered.

that is a pretty variety I never realized how many varieties they are of cone flowers until i started collecting them there are so many colors and shapes these sorta look like ruby star the way they are shaped do you know the variety?

These flowers came with the house so I don't know the variety. My daughter has started collecting them. I will be at her place this weekend and get some some photos of hers.

These are beautiful shots. I first learned about echinacea on a trip to Canada in my teens when I became ill. The doctor I saw had me take it as a curative and it worked. So I've been using it ever since.

Great photo essay - a lifeblog of plants - good idea - have you thought of removing seeds yourself and planting them nearby..that way you'll get more of what you like. Thanks for sharing :-))

more about being told to dead head cone flowers I noticed leaves trying to grow under the old dieing flowers so I cut the big stems down and they seam to be taking off again Ill be waiting to see if I get more blooms before fall is over. I have my fingers crossed that I do
