I find it very sad that this country, lying between Canada and Mexico, has no distinctive name of its own as does France, Brazil, China and almost all other countries in the world. Two other nameless countries that come to mind are the united kingdom, and the central African republic. This country, which goes by the descriptive term "united states of America" is one of the world's largest, most powerful and most influential in the world today. By all rights it should have a distinctive name of its own, rather than a mere descriptive term indicating that the fifty states that make up this country are, in fact, united under a single constitution and flag. The flag itself incorporates fifty stars representing each of the "united" states each of which has a distinctive name of its own. Perhaps the founding fathers could not think of a suitable name for the country at the time of federation.
The adjective "American", used to describe numerous characteristics of the country, does not apply since there are dozens of countries located in the North and the South of the Americas which are themselves American. Calling this country "America" is like calling France "Europe". What an insult to the rest of the European countries!
For a long time I have been trying to think of a suitable name for this great country. Finally a name has come to mind. I would name this country
ALAWYO. The citizens would be Alawyans
This new name might take some getting used to, but it does have a pleasing ring to it, sort of like Hawaiian. In case you haven't already guessed, the name Alawyo is derived from the first three letters of Alabama and Wyoming, the first and last, alphabetically, of the fifty states.
What do you think? Can you come up with a better name?

And cause the editing of every single document written about the USA since 1776?
are you mad, Thomas?!
The USA has been known as this entity for over 200 years.... can you really suggest that it changes its name to something as user-unfriendly as you suggest? :)
I obviously travel on a UK passport - but I am a proud Scot.
England is a proud country, The English that you write and speak comes from my country although many countrys have decided to spell words differently and to mispronounce many of them. The COUNTRY England as also given to the world people like Shakespeare, it also managed to give birth to some of the greatest explorers of the world, people like Drake, Cook to name but two. Let me make it abundantly clear to you once and for all, I do not care what definition your dictionary says says about borders and I do not give a dam about your definition on England it, and it maters not a jot in the lives of 30 million people so please refrain from insulting my county.
1 an area distinguished by its people, culture, language, or Government.
2 The territory of a nation or state.
3 The people of the nation or state.
4 The part of the land that is away from cities or industrial areas.
5 A persons native land.
1 England my country of birth, that makes it my native land and as such makes England a country.
2 England is distinguished by its people and its culture, and its language. That also makes England a country, we have quite a large amount of culture and guess what we even speak and write English
3 The territory of a nation or state, seing that England is part of the United Kingdom or Britain that also makes England a country.
By the way I am sorry that I got a bit tetchy in the above posts. I tend to be like that when someone seems to knock my country I hope I am forgiven.
Cheers!
You are right concerning the history of "England"... I live in Scotland.
I believe it is like Holland which is a small part of the Netherlands.
I'll think about the name!!! LOL
'HUP HOLLAND HUP!'*0;-)
We would remember that
(it would be so embarrassing to be abroad and forget the name of your own country because it was a bit too new, a bit too off beat, and you just forgot)
(Tarzan was a British character, wasn't he?)
The Mercians were descendants of the Amerygian Syths of Asia who were descended from one Aimerico over three thousand years ago.
According to Spanish records, Christopher Columbus, before setting sail for the New World from Spain, sailed on ships owned by Richard ap Meric (Anglicized as Richard Amerika) out of Bristol, England. Richard had regular trading routes from Bristol to Spain, Bristol to Iceland, and Bristol to lands to the west. It is unknown whether Columbus ever went to the lands to the west, but records do show that he did sail on Richard's ships to Iceland and to Spain years before "discovering" the New World. Therefore, even if he never went to the lands to the west on Richard's ships, he would have heard about those lands from common sailor talk.
The link below is a map showing Scythia and Parthia. The Amyrgian Scyths were only one branch of the Scythians. Another branch gave rise to the Scots. And others gave rise to other peoples, possibly including the Sikhs of India since history shows that India was invaded by Sakas from Scythia.
The British peoples generally descended from Parthians and the Parthian Empire.
