Toasted Berry Crumble Cereal

Sassy had never eaten Kashi cereal before when she noticed this new Kashi Go Lean Crisp Toasted Berry Crumble on sale.  Regular price $4.55, on sale for $3.  I like dried cranberries and blueberries, so this was worth a taste.  When I paid for it, the cash register spit out a slip with a code that I used on a survey website and they sent me $5 for the survey.  Great!  I have a free box of cereal and a $2 profit.

From the box "naturally sweetened multigrain cluster cereal".  The main ingredient is whole grain oats.  It's sweetened with "evaporated cane juice crystals".  I'm guessing that's pretty close to sugar.  *shrug*

A three-quarter cup serving has 190 calories, 35 of those from fat.  A generous 8g of fiber per serving, which is 30% of the daily recommendation.  9g of protein.

The seven whole grains are in flour that is in the wheat sticks.  "whole: oats, hard red wheat, rye, brown rice, triticale, barley, buckwheat and sesame seeds"  There aren't a whole lot of those wheat sticks in this, it's mostly toasted oats.

I suspect quite a bit of the fiber comes from the chicory root, which is being put in a lot of things these days to pump up fiber, including yogurt.  There are also some unusual things here like brown rice syrup and soy grits.

As for taste, it's pretty good.  There weren't as many dried cranberries and wild blueberries as I'd hoped, but dried fruit is expensive.

On a scale of one to ten, Sassy awards Kashi Go Lean Crisp Toasted Berry Crumble cereal an 8.  It's a lot healthier than most cereals on the shelves.  I'd never pay $4.55 for it, but I'll buy it if I see it on sale again.
