Each year, in Kindergarten, we teach a dinosaur unit for a week. The students learn about, play with, and color/paint dinosaurs. They love it! There seems to be a least one student every year who teaches us how to pronounce dinosaurs long, difficult names.
Here is the exciting part! At the end of the week, after we've discussed how big some of the dinosaurs were, we take the students outside and give them a visual. We tie helium balloons to string that we have pre-measured to be the same height as a few of the dinosaurs. Brontosaurus is a favorite. The children circle around the teacher as she lets out the string with the balloon floating at the exact height of the chosen dinosaur. It is such a fun lesson for the kids; much better than laying out a visual on the floor.
Try it at home. You'll be amazed!
