The 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in London are two years away. But, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to launch Olympic-related merchandise. The Official London 2012 Olympic merchandise launch took place Friday, offering a variety of items for people to purchase, including plush versions of the Olympic and Paralympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville.
Other items include commemorative “countdown†coins, collectible pins, umbrellas, bedding, bags and tea sets. A number of the products are already available for purchase on the official London 2012 online shop.
It makes sense for the organizers of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics to launch Olympic-themed merchandise earlier than later. The sale of official merchandise helps to build momentum and excitement for the London games, while raising funds for the games at the same time. In the case of the two mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, getting them into the hands of children might help ease the early uncertainty and controversy surrounding the mascot choices.
What do you think about the 2012 Olympic Merchandise? Has it been pushed too soon or right on time?
