Kitten & Puppy

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in desired color (MC) - about 2 oz per animal
Small amount CB yarn for puppy
Scraps of CC yarn for embroidery
US crochet hook size F/5
12 mm safety animal eyes (optional)
Polyfill
Yarn needle
Finished size: Kitten - 5 1/2 inches long not counting tail, 10 inches long counting tail.
Puppy - 5 1/2 inches not counting tail, 8 1/2 inches long counting tail.
Notes: Do not join rnds unless otherwise noted. Mark the beginning of each rnd with a scrap of yarn or stitch marker.
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
If not using safety animal eyes, embroider eyes in desired color over muzzle.
Kitten
Body
Rnd 1: Starting at back of body, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Work (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in each next 3 sc) twice, sc in next 2 sc. (18 sc)
Rnds 4 - 5: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 6: Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in each next 3 sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in each next 3 sc, sc in next 5 sc. (24 sc)
Rnds 7 - 12: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 13: Sc in next 5 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, sc in next 2 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, sc in next 5 sc. (18 sc)
**Stuff body at this point and continue to stuff body as work progresses. **
Rnds 14 - 16: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 17: *Sc in next 2 sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, repeat from * once more, sc in next 2 sc. (12 sc)
Rnd 18: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 19: (Sc in next sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off. (8 sc)
Sew opening closed (Whip stitch recommended)
Head
Rnd 1: Starting at center of face, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 4: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in each next 6 sc (starts forehead), sc in next 6 sc. (24 sc)
Rnds 6 - 9: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 10: (Sc in next 2 sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
**If using safety eyes, having rnd 1 as center of face, attach eyes over rnds 5 - 6 **
**Stuff head at this point and continue to stuff head as work progresses.**
Rnd 11: (Sc in next sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (12 sc)
Rnd 12: (Sc in next sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off. (8 sc)
Sew opening closed. (Whip stitch recommended)
Having the flatter side of body as the bottom of body, sew head to rnds 15 - 19 of top of body.
Muzzle (Make 2)
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (8 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc. Fasten off.
To complete muzzle: Hold the 2 muzzle sections side by side with wrong sides facing, sew together over 3 sc of rnd 3 only.
Sew muzzle to center of face under eyes. Stuff each side before closing. With desired color, embroider nose and mouth onto muzzle.
Back Legs (Make 2)
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc in last ch. Working around into opposite side of starting ch, 2 sc in next ch. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 4: (Sc in next sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (8 sc)
Rnds 5 - 10: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 10, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
Stuff leg and sew opening closed. Sew top of back legs over rnd 4 of sides of body. Make sure legs lay flat with body to avoid any wobbling.
Front Legs (Make 2)
Rnd 1: Ch 4, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, working around into opposite side of starting ch, sc in next 2 chs. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each next 4 sc (makes toes), sc in next 4 sc. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 4: Sc in next sc, (decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 4 times, sc in next 3 sc. (8 sc)
Rnds 5 - 8: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 8, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
Stuff leg and sew opening closed. Sew front legs under front of body onto rnd 12.
Ears (Make 2)
Row 1: Starting at top of ear, ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (2 sc)
Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
Row 3: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, DO NOT TURN.
Edging - work 3 sc up side of ear, 3 sc in top point of ear (mark the 2nd of these 3 sc with a st marker), 3 sc down side edge of ear, ch 1, join with a sl st to first sc of row 4. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
Sew ears over rnd 9 of top of head.
Tail
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnds 2 - 3: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 4: Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc. (7 sc)
Rnds 5 - 8: Sc in each sc around.
**stuff tail and continue to stuff as work progresses**
Rnd 9: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (8 sc)
Rnds 10 - 14: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 15: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc. (9 sc)
Rnds 16 - 19: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 20: Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (10 sc)
Rnd 21: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing fasten off.
Add more stuffing if necessary and with the remaining length of yarn sew to to back of body centered between back legs.
Weave in any remaining loose ends.
Puppy
With desired MC, make head and body as for kitten. Assemble sections as for kitten.
Muzzle
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12)
Rnd 3: SC in each sc around.
Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (16 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
Sew muzzle to center of face under eyes, stuff before closing. With desired color, embroider nose and mouth onto muzzle.
Front Legs (Make 2)
Use the same pattern as for kitten, but make 1 leg all with MC yarn and 1 leg with CC used in first 4 rnds only then change to MC for remainder of pattern.
Back Legs (Make 2)
Use the same pattern as for kitten, but make 1 leg all with MC yarn and 1 leg with CC used in first 4 rnds only then change to MC for remainder of pattern.
Sew legs onto body as directed for kitten.
Tail
Rnd 1: With CC yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: SC in next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (7 sc)
Rnds 3 - 4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc. (8 sc)
Rnds 6 - 7: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 8: Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (9 sc)
Rnd 9: SC in each sc around.
Rnd 10: Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc. (10 sc)
Rnd 11: Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (11 sc)
Rnd 12: Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off. (12 sc)
Stuff tail and with remaining length of yarn, sew tail to back of body, centered between the back legs.
Ears (Make 2)
Note: Make 1 ear MC and one ear CC.
Row 1: Ch 3, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in last ch, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
Rows 3 - 6: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, decrease 1 sc over las 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
Row 8: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, DO NOT TURN.
Edging - work 7 sc across side edge of ear, 2 sc in each of the 2 starting chs at top of ear, 7 sc down side edge of ear, ch 1, join with a sl st in first sc of row 8. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
With the remaining length of yarn, sew ears to top of head.
Weave in all remaining loose ends.

I must say, though, that I am confused by this part: "(decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) 3 times". Could somebody help me with this by chance?
