i have never understood why people recommend your posts, pics, vids, etc. what does it mean?

In most cases, a recommendation means that the member found your content interesting or unique in some way. They are therefore recommending your post, photo or video to their friends, or to the entire community.
You do not receive points directly for recommending content, or for having your content recommended by others. However, recommendations can play an indirect role in earnings on the site.
There are several sites that have something similar (Facebook, Digg, etc.)...although this designation typically means a lot less on Gather.
