According to Fox, Ellen DeGeneres is leaving American Idol, which is effective right away. She won't be at any of the auditions going on this summer or on the show when it starts back up next winter.
She is the second judge to leave the show. Simon Cowell's last appearance was at the end of the last season.
DeGeneres added something different to the panel of judges with her style and sense of humor. She was added as a judge last August.
She had four years left on her contract, which leaves us to wonder if her early exit has anything to do with the aggressive changes the show is going to take as it begins its tenth season.
Idol is very popular even though its ratings have slipped considerably. At this time Fox declined to comment on DeGeneres's exit from the show, but she said in statement that it's her decision to leave. This is what she had to say:
"A couple of months ago, I let Fox and the American Idol producers know that this didn't feel like a right fit for me. I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for."
DeGeneres had a hard time when it came to judging the performers fairly. She didn't want to hurt their feelings she said.
There still is no one to take on Cowell's spot. Announcements about the changes are expected sometime soon. Possibly as early as Monday during a TV critics conference.
Just earlier this week, Nigel Lythgoe, one of the original producers of the show could return to Idol.
I can't really say that I am shocked by this news. She clearly was juggling too much and I think too, that it was putting a hindrance on her relationship with Portia. Idol also may not do as well in the coming years. With all the changes and people leaving the show, I don't know what's really left for it now.
