To tell you the truth the 24th amendment gave us the right to vote but we're not supposed to. The founders knew that most people were not smart enough or educated enough to make the right decision. We need to repeal that amendment and we need to go back to the way it is supposed to be where we vote for all state officials and then the state officials vote for the pres and such. We NEVER had a problem when it was set up that way! We need to stop adding stupid ass amendments and stop getting away from the true constitution as it was set up to be.
I saw this comment on another article.Â
The 24th Amendment was passed in August 1962 and forbid states from denying citizens the right to vote in federal elections by imposing a poll tax or other assessment.
The Twenty-fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads:
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The Twenty-fourth Amendment was proposed on August 27, 1962, and ratified on January 23, 1964. It prohibits the federal government or the states from making voters pay a poll tax before they can vote in a national election. A poll tax, also called a head tax, is a tax collected equally from all voters. The amendment was proposed as a civil rights measure because southern states had used the poll tax to keep African Americans from voting.
Poll taxes were commonly imposed in the United States at the time the Constitution was adopted but had fallen into disuse by the mid-nineteenth century. After the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870, the poll tax was revived in the South as a way to prevent African Americans, who were mostly poor, from voting. The poll tax also denied poor whites the right to vote. Typically, the unpaid fees would accumulate from election to election, making it more difficult for poor persons to find the economic resources to qualify for voting.
Now it is interesting to note that the person who made this comment is a self proclaimed Tea Party member.
It is interesting to note that for several reasons our founding father did have qualms about the intelligence of the American people which is one of the reasons why we don't use popular vote when electing president but instead use the electoral college system.

Before the 12th Amendment, you could get a president from one party and a vp of another. Vice President was the consolation prize. Could you imagine that scenario today?
Let's ditch the 12th Amendment. Hilarity will ensue.
The FFs were also much more state oriented that we are today. Loyalty to the state came ahead of loyalty to the nation. They viewed the national government as only coordinating for the states. Thus, the states were to choose the President rather than the people.
Exactly.
That depends. If you are a democrat and happen to run into a butterfly ballot... Things could get ugly...
1.) I never heard of this law.
2.) I never heard anybody support such a law.
3.) I don't support having an elected representative pick the president.
That being said, if people are voting for the representative that picks the federal government, that doesn't mean that they are too dumb to vote.
OK so maybe I am thinking this person does have somewhat of a point.
SURVEY SAYS!!!
XXX
But I do find it interesting that whenever the TP is called out on anything whether it be a defrocked leader or inane idea such as this another TP member will say that the person isnt their leader or the idea isnt a TP position.
So if all these things arent TP positions then what is the TP agenda?
The T.E.A. party stands for "taxed enough already". It is libertarian in nature and stands for smaller government, term limits, etc. but there are all kinds of charters and small groups all over the country with their own set of specific values. There isn't a centeal agenda like liberal organizations have. This isn't like the democrats and republicans where there is a platform of special interests. We all want government out of our lives. I am a member of the Rock River Patriots. If you dig deep enough you'll even see me in an archived video or 2.
We agree with some other tea party ideas and disagree with others but it is a forum where we get people running for office to come in and get grilled by we the people. Some politicians have a set of stones and face the tough questions, others would rather go to The View, drink tea and gossip like some mangina I know...
Now wouldnt allowing the state to elect the federal be even more government in our lives.
And wouldnt not being able to elect the POTUS be further reducing our rights and freedoms?
I came running in here with IBProefin, a thermometer, and hot tea!
Also, one of the Republican candidates has called for a return to the U.S. Senators being elected by the State legislatures.
LOL!
Yes evidently people are too dumb to vote. Look what we have for a president and a congress. Could not resist that one.
Might not have that monster health care bill or cap and crap but all the Bush policies would still be going strong just like they are now.
Bush v. Gore
In 2000, the Supreme Court gave the bastard 43rd the presidency and never bothered to sort Florida out. In 2004, Ohio's vote was corrupted by then-Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.
How did you miss those events?
Thanks to another amendment to the Constitution, he has two terms max in which to do it. I don't believe he'll have nearly enough time.
Actually GW Bush was, shocking as it may seem, not nearly the worst president. He may hold the Worst President of the 21st Century title for quite a while, but the 20th and 19th centuries produced some presidents who made GW Bush look like all of the founding fathers rolled into one. Consider the 1920s double header of Harding and Coolidge. Harding presided over the second most corrupt administration of the 20th century. Coolidge inherited the office after Harding's untimely death and sat back and let the economy be destroyed by a combination of an easy credit fueled stock market bubble and an insane policy ("They hired the money, didn't they?") policy on the collection of WWI debt from other countries. Ronald Reagan's adult supervision saved him from equaling Coolidge and Harding even though he did preside over the most corrupt administration, in terms of indictments and convictions, of the 20th century. In the 19th century there was Grant and a couple of guys in the pre-Civil War era who were consummate zeroes.
I am a foreigner but from what I can see from all the answers, I would say most of you are not really mature to vote correctly! (for Democrats or Republican, I do not judge!)
I followed closely either in the USA or in Geneva (American Embassy) the elections since 1984 (re-election of R. Reagan with the highest majority never seen before!), and I feel that these votes are done on a "emotional" basis more than on "factual" basis.
There are knots on my forehead and dents in the desk.
WHY IS AMERICA SO DAMNED STUPID
What or which corperation(s) are you talking about?
Regan started the corporate take over by the Great Deregulation of the 80's continued by Bush I, Clinton (NAFTA, Telecommunications act and bank de-regulation ) Bush II putting the downhill slide into overdrive with the Wall street engineered economic meltdown in 2007 - Obama is taking baby steps, but it's like trying to hold back the ocean with a broom.
The final nail in the coffin is the Citizen's United vs, the FEC - which has given corporation "Natural person" rights - including unlimited campaign contributions to political elections.
RIP Democracy 1776 - 1980s
To re-iterate a proposal I made during the last election cycle:
Have the House, Senate, POTUS and the Supreme Court wear corporate logos by the corporations that bought them - like NASCAR drivers
Nora being uninformed doesnt mean being stupid or unintelligent.
Small business grows to big business, they both employ people who in turn buy products so the circle gets bigger.
Lots of lower middle income folks have pension funds, mutual funds, 401K's which all benefit when any business/corporation makes profits.
Some of you seem to want to kill the golden goose of business. What jobs then? How much hunger then? Who bails you out then?
Of course, if you are already independently wealthy, it doesn't affect you. Or does it?
