Yesterday, I had the song "The Heart of the Matter" stuck in my head. Interestingly enough, I had two different versions stuck there, the original by Don Henley and the cover by India Arie. So, it got me to thinking that maybe I needed to think more about forgiveness and what it means to me right now.
Forgiveness
I hear that song
in my mind
“even if, even if you don’t love me anymore”
Each word digs a little deeper
the need, the want,
the desire there
But deeper still
the ache, needle sharp pain,
memories once shared
In the deep well of my heart
the bucket slowly rises,
filled to the brim
feelings lap over the edge
and at the top
they gently spill
Yes, it’s about forgiveness
as each drop
finds the ground
Rain will replace the flow
with memories of love
and compassion
Until it is filled once more
Below again it goes,
the overflow drips down
healing the painful water
that continues to rest
in my heart’s ground
The procedure repeats itself
each time it’s
a little better
And one day soon
when I can think of you
the mend will be complete
No more stings of memory,
No longer will my heart sink
And then I will finally
be able to say,
“even if, even if you don’t love me anymore”
