A black couple in South London has given birth to a white baby; complete with beautiful blond hair and bright blue eyes. The little girl has been named Nmachi, which means "Beauty of God" in the Nigerian couple's homeland.
Ben and Angela Ihegboro were stunned to say the least when their daughter was born white. According to Independent Online , the baby's mother Angela, 35, beamed as she said, "She's beautiful - a miracle baby."
Dad Ben joked, "Is
she mine?"
she mine?"Genetics experts have assured the couple that their baby girl is not albino. They explained that pale genes skipping generations before cropping up again could possibly explain the baby's appearance.
The Sun reports that Professor Bryan Sykes, head of Human Genetics at Oxford University and Britain's leading expert, yesterday called the birth "extraordinary".
He told reporters, "In mixed race humans, the lighter variant of skin tone may come out in a child - and this can sometimes be startlingly different to the skin of the parents."
Professor Sykes also said that both parents would have needed "some form of white ancestry" for a pale version of their genes to be passed on.
So what do you think? Could this beautiful white baby girl simply be the result of some genes gone awry or do you think there is more here than meets the eye? Could Ben Ihegboro possibly be wondering if perhaps this baby truly is his biological child? Do you think he should ask for a paternity test to determine that he is in fact little Nmachi's father?
On the other hand, if she truly is a result of some recessed genes and he requests a paternity test, is he risking his marriage to Angela?
This is certainly a conundrum of sorts; one I would certainly want a much deeper explanation for. Yet I'm honestly not sure what the right way would be to go about getting such an answer. There is a lot at stake here.
Have you ever known a black couple to give birth to a white baby with blond hair and blue eyes?
