Janet Jackson has signed on with BlackGlama as their new face of fur, and PETA is up in arms about it.
PETA Spokeswoman Amanda Schinke made the following statement to the press.
"It's amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn't think that Janet was this desperate. Surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death to recognise that both occur in the production of a fur coat. We are asking her to think again and to donate these stolen skins to be used as bedding for animals orphaned by other human-caused disasters, such as loss of habitat."
The pop sensation and sister of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson will be the face of BlackGlama's "What Becomes a Legend Most?" campaign. The ads will feature Janet Jackson captured by Rocco Laspata and will run in high quality glossy magazines later in 2010. In addition Jackson will appear on a billboard for BlackGlama that will be displayed high above Times Square in New York City.
Janet Jackson isn't the only celebrity to have both posed for BlackGlama furs, and to have riled up PETA at the same time. Sophia Loren, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor also served as BlackGlama's faces of fur.
I actually thought it had become not only politically incorrect, but also quite unfashionable to wear real fur. Maybe I've simply lost track of the latest fashion trends, but the last time I was in New York City, I don't recall a barrage of furs on the fashion front.
While I'm not opposed to the hunting and killing of animals for food, and I have even more respect for those hunters who do their best to use as much of the animal as possible, I'm not in favor of killing animals solely for their furs. Furthermore, I don't particularly find that dressing in fur is all that attractive.
What do you think? Are you opposed to the killing of animals for their furs? Do you think Janet Jackson has accepted this position because her career is floundering?
