Yes Elizabeth, that's the attitude women should have! That "submit" thing is just too absurd in any relationship. It's downright perverse when the man thinks that way, and so very sad when the woman in their relationship goes along with it.
Yep. Two adults in a relationship should both behave like adults and be an equal partnership.

YW! Nice to see you on gather today. I have a point goal. I need about 200. I am going to try to read all my friends posts and catch up with them, and see what hapens.
He must be part of the group that comes to our campus...and has for the past 20 years. When I was a student, we called the guy Mad Max. There was also Salvation Sally, but Max was legend. He would get all worked up and call women on campus whores and make comments about how we were dressed. Yes, he got shown some titties. I think that's why he kept coming back.

The guys would give him condoms and tell him he'd be okay if he just had some safe sex. We had a few seminary students who got into fights with him and pressed charges for assault. He was finally banished when he grabbed a woman's dangling earring and ripped it from her ear for being a "whore."

This "submit" crap is the same thing I heard from my own mother when I was smacked around. She said I deserved it for being "mouthy." To this day, she sides with my ex who was not a "christian" when he hit me, but later, after he did all the drugs in 2 states, he claimed to have converted.
Jesus H. Christ. It's sick when people put their twisted religious beliefs ahead of the wellbeing of their kids. I grew up in a small town where a lot of girls had mothers like yours. I was one of the lucky few whose parents told her she didn't have to submit to any man.

We had a guy come to our campus a few times screaming and shouting about whores and gay sex. We told him "don't knock it til you try it" and some of us would make out in front of him. He didn't last long.
I'm wondering why UC gave him security protection. They didn't do that at our school. Poor Mad Max had to fend for himself amongst the whores and degenerates.
In the '60s and '70s there was a preacher named Hubert Lindsey (Lindsay?) who frequented the UC Berkeley campus. People called him "Holy Hubert." He'd attract big crowds, mostly composed of hecklers. I don't remember any flashing of body parts. Considering the time and place it's odd. People mostly yelled insults. A lot of the insults weren't too creative, kind of like a run of the mill Gather political discussion.
Yeah it really bugged me that the security guard was telling people to give him space when he was the one walking up to some of the girls. If he was there on a formal speaking engagement then I could understand the presence of security but anyone who just walks on campus and starts harassing people should be left on his own.

This "how women are dressed" thing goes back to our Puritanical origins. This leads to the Reverend Davidson syndrome (Somerset Maugham's "Rain.") These guys are so repressed until it bursts out. Anyway, how anyone wants to dress is their business and that's very far outside the realm of what any other person's "moral" code dictates. If that guy has a problem with cleavage, he shouldn't display his.

I hate it when anyone takes part of the Bible message like that. Sure the Bible says to submit to your husband. But that is if you have a Christian husband who loves you as much as Jesus loved us, enough to die for you. An abusive spouse doesn't love anyone, no matter how many times he says so. "Love is patient; love is kind." Etc. If it's not those things it is not love.

yes, i think the husband is supposed to be the leader of the house, as long as he is also the provider, the first one to face any kind of danger, and truly BEING that good and faithful husband. If he drinks, abuses the daughters, or the wife, or extorts her for money and does not feed his kids, he is not the husband the Bible is talking about no matter how many preachers side with him

I agree. And submission even in that text doesn't necessarily mean what the negative connotation it is given. To me when I read that and it is in Ephesians that Men should submit to God and love everyone as God so loved the church. And wives should submit to their husbands as God so loves the Church. I'm paraphrasing here but to me that means you should love and respect your husband as God loves us and the church and vice versa. Not necessarily that men have power over us and we should bow down to that power.

Most of the Biblical calls for wifely submission are actually third/fourth century interpolations; they're not in the original text.

How come US politicians (mostly on the Right) blast foreign clerics who call for stoning and otherwise killing women, yet are utterly silent when some religious figure here calls for essentially the same thing? Just asking.

I am glad this incident is bringing meaningful dialogue to a serious subject. I know from experience how the church responds to women and children who need protection-they just don't.
You're right, they don't respond or worse- they respond in a negative way by telling the woman she's a bad wife and it's her fault.

I don't agree with it either and I am a Christian. Would I be flashing the man my boobs, probably not. My husband and I got together well before we decided to join a church and we already had in mind how the dynamics of our relationship were going to go. I have heard this epitaph given by members of my church and church leaders. We even had a pastor who we still just love tell my husband that our home might not be blessed because Travis wasn't taking more of an active role as the man of the house ie I manage the money. With this I think you just have to take it with a grain of salt. For me I think of how our culture as humans was at the time the Bible was written. Yes during that time this was the norm, this was what was accepted. Am I living that way now - absolutely not and most religious officials once you tell them thank you for the insight but I just don't or can't agree will often move on.
