A while back I invited some of my friends here at Gather to join me at Lockerz.com. With several months of experience since then, I have to apologize for wasting your time.
It's not to say that Lockerz is a scam site that does not legitimately send out prizes to members who successfully redeem their points. On the contrary I have read enough third party reviews to conclude they really do send out prizes to the few and fortunate that can get in on a redemption. The problem with Lockerz is that your chances of successfully redeeming a prize is less than 1%.
I first signed up almost a year ago. Apparently the site launched back in June of 2009. They seem to make their money off advertisements, video views, selling specialty items for high mark up, and selling survey information.
The basic routine is earning points and spending them on prizes. Points, or "PTZ" as they are officially called, are earned by answering daily questions, logging in daily, referring friends, watching videos, and shopping. I found most of these functions pretty boring. The videos, where you can earn the most points, only appeal to a narrow group of music and movie lovers. Referring friends is difficult; you don't get a referral link, they must give you and email address to put in their system. Shopping, like the video section, also appeals to a narrow group of interests. You can use your PTZ to reduce the price of an item, or you can pay full price to earn more PTZ through the purchase.
What stands out is the prize section- MacBook laptops- Cameras- MP3 players, PayPal cash, and other miscellaneous items. I had built up enough points for at least an IPod Shuffle or even a Flip Video HD. Up till this point, all the trouble has been worth it. However...
The process for redeeming a prize dooms the site. "Redemptions" are held once a month, with sometimes special redemptions for certain groups, such as those that have purchased from the SHOP section. Lockerz won't tell you when the redemption is, they will give a time frame of perhaps a week, in which the redemption could occur. I found most of them occurred between 5 and 6 pm eastern time.
Yesterday, I finally caught a live redemption. I was minutes away from getting an HP Mini... or at least I should have been. 15 minutes after the redemption started, everything was out of stock, except some computer desktop backgrounds, which are practically worthless. But even worse is the site was so bombarded with members trying to redeem that it took 10 minutes just to log in. Apparently, if you don't log in the exact minute the redemption goes live, you've missed the boat. And who has time to sit around and wait for that single minute all week?
Hence, This is why I call Lockerz a scam. It appears to be a great site, but the redemption process is stacked so that it's nearly impossible to turn your PTZ into a worthwhile prize. At least with most sites, they don't give you a five minute long window to redeem per month. Avoid this place like the plague. I don’t expect to get anything with my PTZ now, if I do it will be from the shop section.
The Bottom Line: Unless you are a big fan of the latest music and movie fads, Lockerz isn't the place for you. It's a frustrating waste of time, and I highly recommend you avoid this site. GSN's Oodles program, which is annoying enough with their slow prize restocking, is a great place compared to Lockerz.
