Anita has been an active member of the Gather community since Nov 11, 2007. She is from Nova Scotia, Canada.

 She is fond of good books (especially science fiction/fantasy), action movies, and oil painting as a hobby.


She has been writing for several years, interrupted periodically by those pesky events in life. Her main writing focus is in the fantasy genre, but she also dabbles in poetry and non-fiction. She also has a great interest in history and mythology, often working those themes into her books and stories.

I will not be in on the beginning of the chat as I have a speaking engagement this evening but hope to get back to the computer before it is over. I look forward to this author's input.

I would be interested in hearing about her experience with self publishing and the companies she has worked with. Good, bad or otherwise? Helpful or not? Involved in sales promotion or not?

Does she have a promotional plan and if so is it working for her? Does she have recommendations for others?

Will get back if possible. If not, I will read later.

I did receive it. They have been keeping me pretty sedated. I am trying my best to stay awake for this chat. I have not been able to do much, not even read. I will not be allowed to do anything for 90 days but after this week they will not be keeping me sedated all the time. I hope to feel well enough to read and do computer work soon.

Hi all! Thanks Connie & Anita for having this chat. I have not read the books either :( but intend to rectify the problem in the future. My "to read" list is getting longer by the minute. My question is: Do you have a routine you follow to write (i.e. quiet area, type instead of hand write, etc.)

No, Renda I have no routine. I just write when I can get the time or when ideas insist on coming out. I'm a terribly haphazard writer.

I think the genre is just now starting to get the respect they deserve. I know many people who read love them now that would never have picked one up in the past.

No, I don't think the fantasy/sci-fi genre gets enough respect, Darlene. I've actually written about it on MySpace and at my Examiner page. I think many genres have the same problem, that they are consider less than mainstream fiction.

I'm partial to my villains, but I think my very favourite character is Nimue from a short story in Inside Realms called Legendary Debts. The voice just came out perfectly for me.

It's from King Arthur legends. The story is a modern day continuation of King Arthur.

First, I have nothing against sunshine. I just don't write a lot of stories with happy endings, all wrapped up with pretty bows. I like to explore more darker impulses of my characters.
With the poetry, I write poems on emotional subjects and sometimes they poems come out sad or dark.

My sister is a budding fantasy writer. Do you have advice for her on how she can keep the details of her fantasy world straight as she writes? Do you use a butcher block page or maybe a spreadsheet. Thanks for your willingness to answer our questions!

Amanda, I like to do outlines, character lists, maps, even lists of plants and animals if I'm worldbuilding. I have a folder for each book with my notes and research. I have a page on Squidoo on how to write a fantasy novel.

First -- Connie, glad to see you "up and around." I've been away from Gather on baycation etc. but I trust all is well with you.

A.F. -- congrats on this chat and on having seven books out!

I understand from previous conversations/posts and your answers thus far that you're drawn to the dark side and you were surprised once when I found humor in one of your Gather Shorties. From the Shorties, it's easy to tell you're able to write in many genres. If you *were* going to write something with a happy-ever-after ending, do you think it would still have a horror element? :-)

I'd say a new writer should try the small press publishers first. Self-publishing is difficult; I tried it mainly to learn the business from the ground floor.

Ruthi, I wanted to learn from the bottom because I knew very little about how to get an agent, or submiting to a publisher. I figured I'd make all the mistakes on the self-published books.
I have made a lot of contacts and created an author platform through self-publishing my books.

I missed the first part of Ruthi's question last night, but I recommended small press publishers because they tend to be more welcoming to new writers and many of them them accept non-agented submissions.
But a writer should find the publishing they feel work's best for them. I'm happy I went the self-publishing route.

Darlene, I didn't really celebrate my first books; I was too busy learning how to promote them.
I should do another blog tour, but I need to find the time. I'm backed up on book reviews and I'm writing an online novel and my sci-fi articles at Examiner.com.

Connie, a blog tour is when an author guests on a series of blogs, usually to promote a book.

Only a third of the book is 100 word or less stories; there are under 1000 word stories and regular stort stories as well.

Did you design your own covers, A.F? I really like the "Inside Realms" one.

I've heard that it's hard to break into the fantasy genre. I've dabbled in writing fantasy, but my agent told me I'd be better off focusing my efforts elsewhere. It's so much fun to make up new worlds, though. I'll probably keep writing it for my own entertainment. Even if no one ever reads it but me. :-)
