Not only should prayer be allowed, it should be mandatory. When I say mandatory I mean that prayer should be a part of every school day like recess or lunch. I do not mean that every student must pray or even that every student must participate in prayers, just as every student doesn't have to eat lunch. Some things are optional.
Just like lunch there must be guidelines. After all prayer is food too - food for the soul. And everybody has one whether they feed it or not.
Here are the guidelines: 1. Any prayers that are recited or read aloud should be generic and should not contain the names of any personages exclusive to one particular religion. 2. Prayers should invoke God or be addressed to God, keeping in mind that the name of God is different in different languages. 3. A spirit of reverence should prevail during prayer.
Our human society has been in decline for several generations; disobedience to authority, intolerance, crime, adolescent sexuality, alcohol and drug use, ever-declining educational standards, are all on the rise. If, after a period of time using prayer as a normal part of every school day these signs of social decay continue to escalate then prayer in the schools should stop immediately.
