Today, while Swedish Crown Princess Victoria’s lavish royal wedding to personal trainer Daniel Westling sparks romantic dreams and fairy-tale awe among some, many ordinary Swedish citizens are aghast at having to foot half of the $2.5 million bill for it. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, pays the other half.
A Facebook group of 56,000 Swedish taxpayers now exists to support refusal to pay for the wedding.
The monarchy in Sweden has served mostly ceremonial purposes since the legislature stripped King Gustav VI Adolf of all remaining powers in the 1970s. Support for continuing the monarchy at all has dwindled to about 56%.
