I get very impatient with the ethos that it is fine to willfully cause the suffering of innocents to make political points. I presume (perhaps mere projection) that Ms. Thomas was feeling the same when she lashed out at the immediate perpetrators.
Yes, Jews have been persecuted, tortured, murdered, in many widely abhorred
historical incidents. Jews have been wanderers in others' lands, ghettoized,
kept apart. In other instances Jews have been lauded, individually and as
groups. I find it intriguing that for such a small percentage of the overall
population, there have been such a very large number of amazing people of Jewish
heritage on the world stage.
This controversy is not about those of the worldwide Jewish community. This is
about Israel. "Israeli" is not synonymous with "Jew". To brand someone expressing
serious distaste with Israeli policies and actions as antisemitic (as seems to be the kneejerk reaction) is even more inaccurate than to call someone who protests some US policies, actions, administrations "antiAmerican". It does not even necessarily indicate that one is anti-Israel. If we don't express our distaste, disgust, anger to our friends
when they are to our minds clearly out of line, how will they know to learn to do better?
Indeed, is this the prevailing
opinion of most of the countries of the world? God help us.
God help us. Interesting choice of words... I don't know if you believe in God, Warren, but someone is protecting Israel and it's not us.
A greater example of Almighty God and the validity of His written Word should not be needed by anyone?
Retaliation and vengeance aren't the same as protecting themselves. In fact, retaliation and vengeance tend to be self-escalating cycles that NEVER end short of all-out war. And I think I see that comin'.
The wrong that the Jews did to provoke the wrong of terrorism is to merely exist Chuck you pathetic Palestinian shill. It is like you are just blind on this issue, though you think you say the right words in disclaimer.
I'd had loved to have Chuck in the run up to WWII blaming the French and British for not preventing all out war that almost everyone saw coming and never mentioning anything Hitler did and not even calling him by name.
Denying the legally established State of Israel to exist would be tantamount to saying hatred, prejudice, displacement or extermination are acceptable if their neighbors and a world majority deem it so. Under this existing scenario can any foreseeable vision for peace be sustained? NO. If Israel’s neighbors really wanted peace they could easily allocate a portion of their own land to create a Palestinian State. The long standing hatreds make it impossible at this time for both to coexist in peace.
Just as terrorists have manipulated the world into submission with their cowardly agendas and obvious evil intent, the bloated expanding bubble of world chaos will eventually burst leaving us all going to war, with Israel blamed for our own shortsightedness. The handwriting is on the wall for anyone who can see and understand. As Warren exampled above, and left to its own devises, the world of man is making every effort to destroy itself – and they will unless sanity, wisdom, and a live-and -let-live mentality prevails under God.
It was clear to me, that Ms. Thomas was being facetious, and out of frustration, mimicking this sort of thing, which is often spouted about the Palestinians just . . going away.
"If Israel’s neighbors really wanted peace they could easily allocate a portion of their own land to create a Palestinian State."
They are people, and they too have a right to inhabit that area, by the same international decrees. You say they ought to fade away, and she imitated you . . (and laughed). Her "crime" was to speak of the Israelis, the same way you speak of the Palestinians, I say. That is verboten in our culture, and anti-Arab/Muslim stereotyping is considered brave and honorable.
I tell you the truth; I don't believe God will accept "but the other folks were doin' it", as an excuse.
But I say unto you which hear, Love ye your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you,
And unto to him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
(Jesus of Nazereth)
> how can we expect long entrenched historical hatreds to be resolved?
> The only possibility in any hope for peace is a two state solution.
They could be if the rulers of the Arab/Muslim states were responsible human beings and leaders, but they are not. In Iran in the mosques they are death to Israel banners for everyone to see. If you do not agree with that, you will never make it past the bare subsistance level in life, and you may not even make that unless you are a devout Muslims.
The fact is, whatever the sins of our own countries, these countries are entrenched in a dehumanizing despotism terroristic totalitarianism that the only cure for is outside intervention.
Giving the Palestinians their own country is like solving a squabble between two children by sending them to their rooms ... this conflict is not among two good-intented entities, it is the proxy-battle on the planet between freedom, liberty, humanism, and what is basically evil incarnate. Yes, I sound dramatic, but what has happened is that the US through media manipulation has been desenstitized over a long period to looking at other countries, and even ourselves in a critical way, we are afraid to be judgemental ... because it can be bad for other people's buisness. I say the hell with that.
In no way did I say that the Palestinians ought to fade away. If I thought there was any inkling of a chance that they could both coexist in peace under a one State roof (Israel) there wouldn’t even be the need to discuss this. But that's not the case.
Yes, Jesus IS the way and the life for true Christians who believe in Him and His word unconditionally. But, in that part of the world Muslims rule and would like to see us out of the way as well. My conclusions are based on the fact that the violent and volatile history of the Middle East cannot be ignored. The deep rooted hatreds against the Jews and a call for their extermination are NOT something that can be reversed easily, if at all in the near future. Also, Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Imagine what will happen when the Arab/Palestinian population/citizenry/voters outnumber the Jewish vote in some future election – a Jewish State governed by Muslims? I don’t think so.
Long term sustainable solutions are needed and not just a band-aid foolishly and haphazardly slapped over an open and bleeding laceration.
"John, at first, I too thought that she was being facetious, but then what would she apologize for?"
Because the public will not listen to such a thing, you must know that . . In her apology she said;
“I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians" She said they "do not reflect” her “heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”
I'm not in the market for a new Lord.
I told you, not shopping, obeying. Sorry I said anything.
People talk about the Jewish lobby, but everything in the modern world militates against the Jews, and the size of the Arab lobby is a state secret .... hmmm, wonder why?
The US passed a law that it is illegal to divulge just how much Saudi Investment there is in the US ... in fact, way back in the 60's there was a worry about Saudis buying majority holdings in our most strategic concerns.
It is easy to fight against the manipulation you can think of ... and after all the world has heard accusations of Jewish conspiracies forever. In fact, in the Middle East on national television they show movies to Muslims about how Jews kidnap their children and use their blood to make crackers. This is the kind of ignorance that attacks the Jews and never bothers to look at or comment on the Arabs/Muslims.
Being neither a Jew, Muslim, Christian, Arab or Israeli, the reason I am so verbal on this is purely because this thing, this huge bullying conspiracy against the Jews, right after the worldwide tumult and horror of WWII I find one of the most disgusting and repulsive things I perceive in the world, and I damn sure am going to stand up and talk and be counted every time I get a chance, just like I would talk about the rights of blacks, or latins, or any human being on this planet, and including the environment. Right is right, and evil is evil ... and apparently people are so manipulated that sometimes they need it spelled out for them.
I think you have added something to this issue, that none of the commenters have yet discussed. Your list of world problems, and the large number of examples of national groups and governments that are actively comitting atrocities on others, puts the entire mid east stage in an interesting perspective. The number of people killed, the number of refugees, possibly even the degree of suffering in Palestine and Israel, is a small fraction of the world wide toll, none of which has anything to do with Israel. And yet, polls in Europe for the past several decades have consistently identified Israel as the major evil power in the world today.
One does not need to support Israeli policies to see that there is a great distortion in the focus on Israel. And of course, it doenst take too much insight to see why this is true, if one considers the enormous power and influence of the Arab propaganda machine (in Europe), and then contrast that with the stupifying talent of the Israelis to make themselves look even worse than they are.
My own view is that if the press simply left the Middle East, and all the so called do gooders, and human rights activists and everybody else just ignored it, and started to pay more attention to, oh I dont know, how about Africa, things would actually get better. Without such a sympathetic audience, bith sides might even start thinking about the benefits of peace, instead of trying to outdo the other in the "biggest victim" sweepstakes.
So true Sy.
This is the thing that is not being talked about or recognized ... if Americans realized what morons Middle Eastern oil money is making of them. In the book "Secrets of the Kingdom" the flow of corrupting Saudi oil money is discussed. It is a classified secret what percentage of US companies is owned by the Saudis, how much of their money is where in the US.
How can we have a democracy when the very companies that deliver us our news, media, publishing are influenced in ways we do not even know about, by people that do not have any intention of fitting into Western culture, but instead plan to corrupt and destroy it.
I don't think anything is going to get better without a major confrontation of this and investigation. It used to be that many companies with huge Saudi investment or ownership were prohibited from hiring Jewish people. Can you believe that! In the United States, and it was hidden and swept under the rug.
Now, imagine what do you think would happen if Jewish companies did not hire non-Jews? This issue is ugly, dangerous and needs to be tackled head on with some real facts.
Second and more fundamental is a common error. The idea that Jews are somehow newcomers to the Middle East, that the shtetl, not the Judean desert (despite its name), is the Jew’s natural habitat, is perniciously widespread even among some politicians and pundits who defend Israel uncompromisingly. While those who harbor a bit of Helenism (a new noun, inspired by Ms. Thomas) cast Jews in Jerusalem as criminal interlopers, there are also many untouched by the virus of Jew-resentment who tend to view the Jewish presence in the Holy Land as a new development. They regard it as a sort of consolation prize for having endured the Holocaust.
Mere days before Ms. Thomas’ self-revelation was publicly revealed, a similar sentiment to hers was captured on camera on the West Coast. Among the many mass protests against Israel for having dared, in the recent flotilla incident, to actually enforce its embargo of a bad neighbor (which phrase presumably includes one who wishes to drive you into the sea) and against Israeli soldiers who had the chutzpah to shoot at people who were trying to kill them was a demonstration that took place on Memorial Day near the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles. A mob chanted angry, menacing slogans in the cause of peace.
A widely viewed newscast video of the demonstration made the rounds in subsequent days. It focused largely on a Jewish teenager who intrepidly walked alongside the unholy warriors, holding aloft an Israeli flag and calmly, eloquently and pointedly answering questions from a reportorial voice off-camera.
Whether one thinks the one-boy flag battalion foolhardy or fantastic probably depends on whether one is or isn’t his parent. But it was hard not to smile at the finger the teen metaphorically poked in the collective eye of the nearby mob.
What was most telling about the clip, though, were its final seconds, when two people who were part of the anti-Israel protest, appeared on camera to answer questions.
First came a young woman, hatred pouring from her eyes like oil from an out of control gusher. Asked if she supported a “Palestinian state alongside Israel,” she rebukes the questioner angrily, wagging her finger and contorting her face into a mask of anger. “No! No! No!” she protests furiously. “The Jews” – speaking the word like it is a disfiguring disease – “can live in a Palestinian state!” she exclaims. “There should not be an Israeli state.” Then, imagining her perfect world, she declares emphatically: “An Israeli state does not even exist!”
Although she isn’t quite done, the camera pans to her companion, a young man with a vacant expression and a baseball cap on sideways, who offers the interviewer his own sage assessment.
“The only reason Israel is doing this,” he explains, though it’s not clear if he is referring to the Gaza blockade or to existing – “is because they got kicked out from, uh, the German… uh, whatever happened to them. So they’re trying to take out their anger to someone else.”
“What about the Bible?” asks the interviewer.
“The Bible?” the young man repeats, uncomprehending.
“You know,” explains the interviewer. “Solomon? Uh, the Jewish presence in Israel in Biblical days?”
The response: “I don’t know about that.”
I’m sure he doesn’t. And, unfortunately, it would seem that he’s hardly alone. World leaders and editorialists who speak and write as if the Jewish presence in the Holy Land is some modern development, that the justification for Jews to live in Jerusalem emerged ex nihilo from European crematoria, are, if better-intentioned, equally uninformed.
And the information they are missing is truly central to the Israel-Palestinian conflict – and should be central to any discussion of the same. What they don’t realize, or choose to gloss over, is that “Israel,” in the phrase “Land of Israel,” refers not to a modern-day country but to an ancient people.
That Jews over the past century haven’t come to the Holy Land.
They have come back to it.
The one thing we do not touch or talk about is the system on which the world plays this game, and that is the level at which these world wars are now being fought, in the background, with no one getting a vote or able to make a decision, and common sense is out the door if there is money to be made for people we do not even know.
Even if she was upset with the problem of Gaza's aid.
She is an old lady ... some arteriosclerosis and here you are.
