My Poor Son

My son is about to turn 19 on Monday and I think he is learning what being an adult is all about. He just recently had his car broken into. We had just bought him a new MP3 player and he must have left it visible. So, somebody smashed his window in and stole it. So, he had to pay to replace the window. The cost of the window was nearly 1/4 of his bank account savings. His job isn't giving him very many hours and although he has turned in several applications, he hasn't received any interviews. He is going to college and just found out that he is going to owe much more this year than last year. He also has to pay more for his car insurance. I feel sorry for him, but I have been trying to tell him for a long time that he needed to build his bank account up. I guess he didn't believe me! Well, he is learning fast!! I am really upset that the MP3 player we just bought him was stolen (he didn't even have it 24 hours!). But, we are going to buy him another one for his birthday. It seems like the least we can do for him.

Years ago, my son had his car broken into in the mall while he was at a movie and his fancy stereo system was stolen. I think people who steal from others are disgusting!

How horrible! I'm so sorry to hear that.......insurance for boys/young men is absolutely outrageous...........I'm sure he's just totally frustrated, and then having to replace broken glass. Our son is 23 and still doesn't drive, so guess there are a few "plus's" in his not driving.....cars are so expensive, so is insurance, etc., etc........I surely hope that good things will start happening soon.

It's a shame someone had to go that length to steal an MP3 player. I agree with your suggestions for your son, definitely needs to have some emergency money set aside these days...never know when something might happen that requires the extra money. Luckily he did have some money saved up though right? Some adults his age and older don't have that much saved!

MP3 players aren't that expensive, but getting a car's windows replaced could be. I guess auto insurance might not cover the damage from having something stolen. After all, the laptop was stolen from the VA contractor's car. I don't drive, and I live close enough to walk home from my job, but there are limitations. My wife drives, so we can go do stuff, which is kind of nice.

I think that insurance should cover these things. If your cd or Mp3 player is stolen from your vehicle, I think Car insurance should pay for the loss. That would ease the burden. File a police report, at least. And, hope for the best.

We did file a police report. but his deductible is too high and he didn't reach the amount to get it reimbursed. I think he should lower his deductible.

I'm sorry that happened to him. I remember my college years it seemed like things were always happening that cost too much money. You should check with your home owners policy they might cover the theft of the MP3 player and anything else that might have been stolen, did he get a police report?

My son just turned 19 last week and yes they learn it's easier to spend than earn. Very few hours at work as well hoping it picks up soon.

You can't leave anything out in the open in your car, even if it's just some change! Criminals and "crash and dash" your car in only a few seconds!

Poor kiddo...learning about the hard knocks of life! I have a 17 year old daughter and I just dread her learning about all the money and stress issues. It is so much easier living with a mommy and daddy that love you and don't tell you every little stresser!

That is awful. I've had my car broken into as well and it's so maddening. I've taught my oldest daughter (age 9) to be VERY careful to make sure her Nintendo DS is hidden out of sight if we have to leave it in the car.

Although a shame he had his vehicle broken into, you can bet its a lesson learned well, because it was learned the hard way. He's young yet, and in time he will learn things along the way.
